I've actually worked out a routine now for the cabinet and its called Frankenstone. The magician fashions a small creature out of clay (6") and puts a few drops of blood into the figure. The figure is then chained to the back wall of the cabinet (complete with flaming torches on the walls). Some electrodes are connected to the model and the cabinet is closed. A main AC power supply is connected to the cabinet and a switch is flicked. The crackle of the current is heard and the lights dim. When the performer opens the cabinet, the creature has either: a) Vanished and is later discovered hanging on the performers back (as if crawling up to his neck). This is a more comic ending and can have the performer searching frantically for the creature. b) Broken free of its chains and is hunched over in the corner, devouring a small piece of raw meat that was placed in the cabinet on the floor before the doors were closed. This electrical changing effect has much potential and avoids the use of animatronic apparatus. Of course a drawback is the fact that you don't get to see the creature actually move. Simon |

As to who invented the little hand that jumps out from between your cupped hands -- it was me, way back in the late 1970s. I kept this to myself for quite awhile, but on a trip to New York in 1982, I showed it around at Tannen's and it took off from there -- even Derek Dingle had a routine with it. And Ray Grismer did not invent "What's My Sign?" -- that was also your humble servant.

Kind of like the old snipe hunts, but with a payoff. I use a "creature" like device doing walkaround for kids at ren fests. I have had kids crawling around on the ground for hours trying to find another "fairy". Back when I was a kidshow performer (NOT ONE WORD FROM ANY OF YOU!!!! We all have our pasts.) I used the tiny doll hand version, and honestly, it worked pretty well. I like the creepier or more animalistic versions though. This is not one I do for adults. I put it in the Bizarre Light category. Bizarre magic that doesn't hit too hard, but still has more substance and more of a gut reaction than a regular stage magic or walkaround magic act. Although I no longer do straight kidshow, I do enjoy performing for children. I like helping them believe that there are little creatures out there, strange things that their parents can't see anymore, little fairies that tie knots in their hair when they are sleeping... they just need to know where to look. So I like Creature or parasite. They have a place in the bizarre. A somewhat whimsical place, but one that should sometimes be visited. Kids need Bizarre too. Gwyd |

I used the little hand as a gag: it would appear and then be crushed and disappear. The routine is in MAGIC FOR DUMMIES under my other name, Roberto Farini.
I also had a magicians'-only routine, where after quoting Vernon ("Confusion is not magic"), I did a three little hands routine, where two hands go in the hand and one hand goes in the pocket -- and how many hands are in the hand? Two? No, there's three hands in the hand. The ending: all the little hands disappeared and my pocket appeared in my hand. I also had a gag where I stuck a miniature card on the little hand. I would then force that card and say I would visualize the selection in my head. As I put my hands up to my head to concentrate, I would secretly stick the hand in my ear so when my hands were lowered the audience would see a hand coming out of my ear (head) with the selection on its palm. |

Bob, I love the little hand. I particularly like it because after a couple of years, it still freaks out my wife.

Bob,
My edition credits you under the name Bob Farmer. When I went to check the reference for my previous post, I was (but should not have been) surprised that I even have that particular page bookmarked for quick reference! Chris |

Udlose, welcome to the forum.
I also like your lantern idea - nice train of thought, attention to detail, and logical consistency. I think one could also use this approach to play it up more realistically overall, if one wanted to. I would claim that I'm hunting for some kind of rarely seen worm or reptile, on which , either it's body or tail (or whatever) is a feature which has an uncanny similarity to a grotesque human face; and explain that in centuries past the creature was credited with all sorts of anthropomorphic qualities due to this property. (think mandrake root!) I imagine if this was done just right, it could still almost retain a little supernaturalality (hey, I just made up a new word !) but, mostly, what it lacks in mythos it would make up for in realism and shock.

The effect is called 'the littlest demon'... Have fun with this one...

Mystician,
That's a really great idea. I think a hybrid of your idea and mine would be the perfect way to achieve maximum effect based on the way I present. Those who know me would tell you that I am a very logic-driven individual, so when my explanation of a trick involves "it's magic." or "ghosts" etc, I loose some of my crediblilty as a performer because they instantly know when I'm no longer being my usual skeptical self. Ironically, my greatest joy in magic is when I fool people who are more skeptical than myself. Growing up in the south, I had my turn to go Snipe hunting. As I got older I learned to appreciate the power a good story has on disrupting ones belief system. To reinforce that with magic is too much fun to resist. Snipe Magic. <-You're not the only one making new terminology. I like the sound of that... I think I might take the time to come up with a definition for it. |

It seems like I've been out-canted as I have no idea what that all means; bit like several moments I've experienced with American TV. And I thought Cockneys were hard to figure.

Ian, snipe hunting is a trick played on neophytes on camping trips or other, similar trips to the woods. The victim is led deeply into the woods and is asked (as I learned it) to hold a bag and/or bang two sticks together to catch the "snipe." The others pretend to go out and scare the snipe toward the trap. In reality they go back to the camp or, even worse, go home, leaving the poor victim holding the bag out in the woods. I am sure there are numerous variations on this.
"Mosfer to snorkledorfing" is as obscure to me as it is to you. However, Egregore, it is crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide. Bill
