I saw a video of Jeff McBride doing some mask manipulation, do you know where can I get information to leard how to do this? I think it looks amazing, and could be very practical for some ideas I got for a show, thank you!

This may be a touchy question !

As far as I know, McBride wants to keep the mask idea to himself, and many magicians feel we should not "steal" his mask routine.

Try going to shaunyee.com. You may pick up a couple of mask manipulation effects. They are different from McBride's.

In my opinion stay away from masks. That is strictly a McBride thing in america!!!
You may and probably will be shuned by many magicains. I got shuned for doing card manipulation in a top hat and sunglasses.

Try not to go down the wrong road.
Just my two sense.

As long as the structure of your routine is totally different it is ok to add mask to your act. Just don't copy McBride's act.

As far as being shunned by magicians, I believe that only occurs when one copy another's act - like the exact routine, same music and costume, etc. Otherwise if you are original in your own way, it should be ok.

Actually McBride is really laid back about his mask steals and productions. If you take a class with him he will actually explain them. He has already made his mark with them. All his pupils and fans will keep other people from copying,he doesn't have to worry about a thing. As far as any publication, not to my knowledge. The new dvd came out, but that is simply on singapore mask changing, like Julianan Chen. No productions or flourishes of masks.

Juliana Chen's color changing mask is very impressive.

Also look at Jauquin Ayala and his work. He uses mask in his stage act and show and it is vastly different then McBrides. For his is serves a purpose and meets his character and theme criteria. If you know him, his entire character and show is themed around his mexican and Aztec culture and heritage. He does some nice stuff.

Yes, a unique stage character and theme can create a totally different and powerful mask act that can be a big hit. Another valuable and notable advice from Kyle. I support that fully.

Just watched and spoke to Jeff last night here in New York. Why would you want to do Jeff's Mask act? Which he did do last night. He's amazing to watch.

Thank you James. It is ok to explore and learn about masks and their usage in magic. They have been a part of many cultures from Aztec's to Japanese theater and Kabuki. They can be used very well. The challenge though is ti be creative with them. Develop something unique that is different and fits your personal style, character and theme for the act or show. You have to be careful not to mimic what Jeff does so much. You need to study masks and magic and then develop something that works right for you.

You could also research quick change artists. The change more than clothes. In the DVD 'Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour' they feature a quick change artist that performs all mask changes.

As Mike said in Mystery Science Theater 3000, "I like No theater better than Kabuki theater"!

Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.
