What is the best impression device for a close up performer? I don't want to be carrying around anything too bulky...

The SOM from Outlaw is a nice compact pocket device... it also comes in a nice "disguised" office memo format.

Do they tear the paper off after drawing on it, and you take the rest of the pad back after or do they have to keep it, can the paper the wrote on be folded and put away? do you have to hold the pad or anything to get a peek?

Noxas,
With the SOM pads (excellent), you hand the participant a pad, they draw whatever. The participant tears the sheet off themselves, and can even tear the next sheet off as well. Only then do you retrieve the pad. (They can hold onto their folded slip of paper, put it in a pocket; whatever). To duplicate the drawing, you may do this in real time - tearing off a piece from the same pad and duplicating the image . . . OR casually place the pad off to the side and get the work during that action, or later even. It is very clean, above suspicion, small and portable. I really like them a lot. -Jerome.

You could also try Scott Creasey's First Impressions pad which I can highly recommend.
