Where he put some money in one of 3 envelopes and had to 'influence' the spectator not to pick that envelope, I was wondering if this is real suggestion, or something which can be bought?

If you mention Derrens effects all you will receive on here is sarcasm. And for dog sake don't mention "secrets of the psychics" its way too painful.

Noxas, you'll find an interesting take on the effect in question in Derren's Trick of the Mind book. It's not exactly the same, but you'll get some ideas from it. Other basics can be found in Mark Wilson's Course on Magic (believe it or not) and several other published sources.

Can I ask why??? |

Because the general consensus is why should you want to do someone elses effects.Learn methods and create an effect around the method then the effect is personal to you.Tho if you are starting out in magic I don't see the harm in it.You learn by doing, get the methods from 13 steps and the effects from PME and they will set you on the road to becoming an accomplished mentalist.

Threre are a lot of new mentalists who are primarily interested in copying Derren Brown. They usually think that knowing whatever method he employs will suffice. Questions about his routines dominate every mentalism forum I've ever been on.
When the veterans of the field try to point them in the direction of the classic works that will help them discover these secrets, they often respond that whatever is in these classics is 'outdated' and not 'what Derren does'. This happens so often, that the veterans either don't bother responding or reply only with sarcasm when these threads pop up (and they do with extreme regularity on every forum.) Not saying this applies to you, noxas... just saying that's where the attitude comes from. The beautiful thing about Derren is that he does use the classics in startlingly novel and layered ways. You cannot really appreciate this until you have a firm grasp of the basics... from both reading and doing.

Thanks bear trees and malchat
I do know alot/most of the methods used by him are not actually psychological and are just old effects which he has just dressed up sooo much to appear different, I know he also uses a lot of preshow work, dual reality, peeks and a lot of editing to get his desired effect..... I'm not going to deny the method if it is some age old method from the 1700's for example, I'm open to any method. |

Corinda and Annemann contain almost everything a mentalist absolutely has to read.

I must admit Derren slayed me when he came on the scene.I cound't figure out how he did what he did and it was a breath of fresh air. Then he played chess and I was like, hang on that's straight out of Corinda and now and again he breathes life into some of the classics, it lets us know that he is mortal after all, jedi or no jedi.

He exposed the Corinda method, if I'm not mistaken...Sounds like Penn and Teller.

I can't see the big problem everyone seems to have re:Derren Brown. He is another performer like any other. He presents his work in good manner and the effects created are very strong.
How many times do we as card workers or whatever claim we have a 'magical power' and do not. We are all guilty of the same crime. On the subject of the Chess game being a Chess player myself there rules regarding the number of moves that can be copied in a game of simultaneous Chess, this is just a disregard of this concept. (by the way I do own 13Steps and can se what your saying) |

He is a Genius. He (and the team behind him) re-invented mentalism, with some classics. Pure Genius.
