Quote: So if an illusion is flashed or blown do you continue with it or just bring it to an end?
It totally depends on what's been flashed or blown. It is always good to have a contingency plan, but some things just can't be covered. Much will depend on your stage persona as well. Lou |

I would go on with the effect and then tell folks that was the trailer for Magic Secrets Revealed IV

Let's face it: when you're on national TV at the Orange Bowl halftime, you can't very well throw your hands up and say, "Oops! It looks like I goofed that one" or some other lame quip. Harry covered perfectly. He did as well as he could under the circumstances.
What would YOU have done under the same conditions? Not "How would you have avoided it" but rather "It's happened. Now what?" |

Starrpower,
Great question. I would have ran off stage to never be heard of again. Maybe go to Tibett like Doug Henning. I guess that is why I am no Harry Blackstone. I would have packed up myself and went down the same trap that the lady came out of. Patrick |

Have an invisible deck waiting in the wings so if something goes wrong, you have an effect ready to go immediately.

Mark brings up a great question and a perfect one as well. The situation that happened to harry was one in which at the time, there really is no turning back. there is no going into the wings to get a spare or an extra. You have to deal with it then and there, keep smiling and cover the best that you can. I feel harry did just that. I am sure he was not a happy camper afterwards, but he kept on going, smiling and doing the best that he could as a true professional.

Now, what's wrong with comedy magic hmm? LOL! I remember a very long time ago a show where: the dove got loose before the curtins even opened and the kids saw him perched atop the curtin rod, I messed up Mental Epic (yes, Mental Epic, turning it into Mental Pathepic! LOL!), and finally, for the big finish, I performed The Sub Trunk whilst the stage was back lit so all the kiddies got quite the education needless to say! Everyone has that one time where they’ve goofed up several times in a set; what can you do?

As has already been said, "Everybody has a bad day" My bad day was in front of around 300 people at a local fair in So. Calif. Local to my place of residence that is. I was doing my short illusion set on a platform and it was extremly hot that day. I was doing the Temple of Benares and of course, many of the things I did just did not work that particular day. I had given my assistant and water bottle to have while inside the temple. My other assistant and I were turning the temple around with the swords already in place. All of a sudden the front leggs fell off the base. I heard, thank goodness the music was loud enough so the audience did not hear, my assistant mutter, "what the he** was that". We picked up the temple and turned it back to the front quickly and pulled out the swords a lot faster than I ever did, and then opened up the top so she could pop out. Well pop was not a good word it was sort of stand up slowly. When she stood up she was no longer this nicely dressed beautiful assistant. She was now this totaly drenched slightly angry assistant that gave me the look of, "I am done, I quit". She was taking a big drink of out of the bottle when the front leggs gave way and about have the bottle of water proceddesd to turn my act into a wet t-shirt show. We finished the rest of the act and I now carry extra hardware and lots of tools to make sure everthing is tight and works well.
Sorry I went into my little story there this was about Mr Backstone. I look at that peice of video and say, it can and deffinatly does happen to all of us. I saw him perform in I think it was 1980 and his command of an audience was, bar none, the best. He made you not just want to see the illusions but he had a way about him that made you feel like a kid again and seeing magic for the first time. He was the greatest, I feel, and there will never be another in my time. I talked to him after the show for only a few short mins. because there were so many that wanted to talk. I did watch as he talked, signed autographes, and took pitictures with whom ever wanted to get one. A true Magician and a Real Person. Mr Blackstone was "Magic". Thank you Steven |
