The "Street" is the purest form of entertainment.... the hat don't lie.
Too many times people get caught up and forget that its all about the entertainment value. we are a diversion from the routine, the mundane and the ordinary. If we remember that our audience wishes to be entertined, collectively we could all raise the bar. At our local magic club there is a bunch of finger flingin card sharks who make my card work look brutal. I don't eve try to compete with their stuff. But they come to see me do my stuff out on the street cause its fun. I have fun, the specs have fun and we all feel good. Earlier I alluded to the fact I wasn't the worlds biggest Gazzo fan. Some of his humour doesn't do it for me. But he is brilliant when working the edge, building his tip and working his cups. I at least can admit I see positives and greatness when I see it. But then again, so many of these threads are dominated by those who never have done what they are hacking, nor will they ever do it. Long live the street, home to performers...

I don't like workin for magicians either. and as far as saying magicians are harder to fool I think that this post should prove the contary. I'm the easyest to fool as long as you don't do some close up card trick. I'm burned out at watching close up card tricks its even painful to sit through the best performance for me sometimes.double lift, pass, blah. I've been inundated. I remember my teacher doug conn[a master at close up cards]would go to convetions and with his huge body of knowledge all they would pester him for was to see his pass. all trying to see who is better like witches cackaling around a caldrin for what they're gonna do to the town when its really what they're gonna do to each other................what am I talking about? |

I think you're right about that JoeJoe. The amateur will spot anything that is not "perfect" but won't put any time into thinking... "wow, he timed that line very well. he must have been doing that for years and years". They also probably won't notice that you never have rummage thru your prop case. All those little things that make a professional act a professional act. This goes for buskers, stand-up magicians, strolling magicians, etc.
A very good observation.

Doug's doin good. he's workin the quarter in new orleans. he is a nice guy and a good friend.if you wanna know more about him read his blog on my space. he's on my friends list at
myspace.com/jimmytalksalot I don't know his address right off. but any way its funny how some people always want to tell us how to do it when they don't do it, isn't it? their toon changes when they go out and do it....then they know why we praise guys like gazzo or who evers makin a living at it. I guess that's really what they're "missing" but I know one thing I don't tell a doctor or a lawyer or any other professional how they should be doin their job or how I would do it better, maybe their tryin to be helpful, bigshots or busy bodies I dunno. and I certainly would be able to figure out what I was "missing" if everyone in the proffessionals field [admirers and non]answered my question pretty much the same. if I didn't like what the professional was doing I would go elsewhere. that's for certain. but I dunno I'm not too bright[have you seen my show] and I do talkalot...too much. my spelling and grammar are real bad sorry. starr power brought it to my attention and he's absolutley right. |

Ted's right. If you haven't at least finished high school, you really don't know what you want to do with the rest of your life. It may be a pain in the wazoo, but the older you get, the more set in your ways you will become and the harder it will be for you to learn anything that you can fall back on. Learn some kind of trade. You may think you are doing what you want to do for the rest of your life, but one of these days, you will find that if you don't have something you can do besides magic, you will be up the creek, without a canoe or a paddle. You will be just like one of those athletes whose knees give out and he doesn't have anything saved to live on. Then what will you do? I've been through three careers. And I can go back to any of them anytime I want to. But there are things that I just don't want to do any more.

What I find nice on this thread is we have some premier street performers, Kozmo, Jimmy Talksalot, and Eric Evans, as well as some who are well known for other fields of magic and they are being supportive of other artists. It just makes my lil' heart warm.

Since stellar performers are posting on this thread I thought Id jump in and let their kudos rub off on me!!!!
Interesting...vereeeeeee interesting. For me Starrpower all I could say re Gazzo is that he cracks me up. I work covent Garden and yes there are performers there who can generate HUGE crowds on the piazza with one (mostly) juggling and unicycleshows...and they are very very VERY good. For me what makes Gazzo something else is he can pull off HUGE crowds continuously 4 5 times a day...stamina as well as an inate sense of crowd control, comedy a bit of magic(a lot actually) and make themstop stay and pay. I reckon youre right to question the why, as it certainly makes us think...something I never thought of really till you asked the question...to go out to an empty space, with a bag of props, stop people on the street(yes I know Key West is a bit different as are festivals)Keep them glued to your show with all the distractions there are, have them cry with laughter, have them smile, have them (mostly) amazed, have them remember the time they spent with you, have them bring their friends back to see your show again...and again...have them remember your name, and most... importantly...have them part with their hard earned dosh, with a smile, and for some its always too little...And have this as your main source of income...And to be doing it for years and years and years and have the respect of ones peers...I reckon that does make someone special. Not everyone cares for Gazzos style Im sure,I think hes a hoot, and just crease up whenever Ive seen him work.I like and admire Nick Nicholas too...he is another legend... Thanks for broaching the question though as its good to explore the reasons behind the whys... Just my tuppence worth...roll on Edinburgh..Oh and Jimmy if youre passing through London and need a pace to crash... Live life and love it Vernon aka James James |
