Still partial to the original finale but
I like to get rid of the spot cards and use a joker and an ace. |

I have used Color Monti for years as an opener. It can't be beat just as it is.

I use a black jack the queen of hearts since that is usually what the spectators associate with Three card monte, and for the kicker card I simply use a low red card. For the finale I simply count off three jacks into a spectator's hand. He/ she will then discover the kicker.
I have tried several other things and various patter but I find that not drawing attention to it at all but let the audience discover it on their own gives the absolute best reaction. Tina |

I've always been a diehard for the original, but you all have me thinking. I'll try it keeping the $14 card Kicker but doing the routine with the red ace 'money' card and a joker. I don't see how this would hurt the established routine, and may just improve it with a actual looking monte routine.........

I keep color Monte with me all time its always with me in my wallet. But I have found that using a joker and a red ace work but are not as effective as the original.
With the original the green kicker is what blows them away! I feel you can get jaws to drop faster with it. But I do have to say I like the diamond ring idea |

First of all, I always use poker-size Bicycle cards. My presentation is about actually being scammed by a Monte hustler in NYC. My kicker card is blank-faced and allows for any closing line I want at the time. I always get a laugh at the end, but the body of the routine is a crooked gambling demo and is geared toward intelligent adult audiences. But I agree that the original routine can be very strong with no changes at all. It's all personal preference I guess.

I've been doing the original since I was 12 (I'm considerably older now; let's just say it was somewhere in the 70's when I started ;-) and I still have the same cards (bought new sets over the years due to wear, but I *had* to keep the originals....) and I use the original routine with the $14 kicker, and it never fails to entertain. Depending on the audience, I always get at minimum, a good reaction, and more often, I'll get big laughs.
Why mess with what keeps on working? And the thing that amazes ME, is that never, not once, has someone said to me they've seen it before (other than my friends who see me do it for others)...

I don't know what happened to my color monte, but this thread tells me I have to order it asap. Isn't it amazing how something so simple can be so powerful? When I was a young magician I always wanted to do the latest and greatest. Now that I'm older I SO appreciate the need to master one thing and make it amazing for the spectator. This would be a good effect to make that point with. Thanks for encouraging me!

Because CM allows for so many variations it really is a "Magician's Choice" effect.
I have done CM for the same group of people and nobody realizes they have seen it before. I currently use "two jokers" and a QH with a 2S finish. Rob |

I still use the standard handling of the effect (sorry for my late response to this topic but just came across it and feel it's an important one), but that is what works for me, I've tried various other ideas that I've had, but always fall back to the OG Monte (no pun intended.....well maybe a little one).
