Caught the Police at Commonwealth Stadium last night. I must say that they just blew me away.
I'm not the world's greatest Police fan, but I do know their music and thought it might be fun to check them out. As my wife said halfway through the show, "they haven't been idle for 20 years." The level of musicianship was far beyond anything I expected and they gave a very solid, honest show. Stewart Copeland is an absolutely jaw-dropping drummer. He is inventive, energetic and always tasteful and interesting. Andy Summers has a unique approach to guitar, providing harmonic support to the song without succumbing to the urge to be a virtuoso. Sting, possibly the weakest musician of the 3 back in 1980, has grown. His voice is stronger and clearer, and his bass playing is much richer and varied than I remember it in the past. What I liked best about the night was the emphasis on the music. The set is large and sophisticated, but it never takes the stage away from the musicians. The night began with Copeland striking a large gong and the band jumping into "Message in a Bottle". And that set the tone for the evening. Strong playing, hard work on stage and respect for the audience. A killer formula that many pop performers don't seem to understand. If they make it your way, this just might make your summer must-see list. John

Interesting. Copeland was asked how he thought they were performing and he said he was a hack drummer and that Sting pranced around like a pansy on stage.

$400.00 for a cheep seat in NYC ..... for $350.00 you can sit behind the stage and see the back curtain ....

What puzzles me is I heard an interview on the radio with the guitar player and he said that IF they ever get back together to play again he would want it to be free shows because they didn't need anymore money and that was the only way he would do it. Four months later they announce this tour and the prices are through the roof....gotta love people.

He was referring to the second show in Vancouver, where the band had an above-average number of screw-ups. I don't think he called himself a hack drummer, but did confess to "making a hash" of "Walking on the Moon". Thankfully, they recovered for the show I attended. John

It always takes practice for a band to get together and play as one. Just pulling some talented musicians together will only work for jam sessions or songs with fixed patterns - e.g. Blues.
So I am not surprised. But they will get the knack soon enough.
