It has happened more often than I care to say. But nearly every time I do a google search about effects or ideas, the Café comes up and while it is VERY helpful at times for me, I also imagine that it helps layfolk (A.K.A laymen) determine details about what we do. While I know this is always a delicate subject about exposure online and what not, but I do think that magicians resources should be the last place that should add to this problem.
I already have had lay people tell me that they will just "google it" to find out how I did something. Usually this doesn't bother me because the majority of what I do is usually beyond a standard google search. But I was a little shocked recently when I did do a google search on a pulse stopping effect that I (and so many others do). And on the first page of results was the magic Café and a topic that not only gave descriptions of that effect but enough info to get at least a basic undestanding of method. very disturbing in the end. More improtantly with the advent of the internet it does seem like we as magi should be trying harder to be less transparent with our lay audience about our secret habits. It makes what we do seem that much less magical. As we all know our art depends on secrecy, so lets make sure that we ourselves keep those secrets by making our resources like the Café, NOT searchable by search engines. Which is an easy thing to do.

Exposure is very important to us and that is why we don't allow discussions that expose or link to exposure sites. As for laymen googling to the Café, It's a simple matter for them to go directly to the Café, set up an account and read whatever they want. There is no way to stop that since we don't know everyone that registers.

Yes, but they should have to sign up before they can read anything. Right now, you don't even have to be a member to get a search result from google and read a posting. No sign up...no nothing. All I am suggesting is that by hiding the site from google, or making the entire Café members only. can the sign up. yes. But it is one more roadblock.

Exactly and that is why we don't allow exposure posts, topics or discussions. The Café is free for anyone to read whether they register or google.
