Thanks for adding your comments Christopher, as was said I started this thread asking for reviews. Paper, or "in person" ones. I also hope Hans turns around and succeeds, but like Broadway, not every show should be there, and not every show is great (for Vegas). Watch the Tonys and see shows get awards, after they have been closed!
From what I had seen of Han's shows, he performed many (a lot!!!) of standard illusions. His show was not produced solely for Las Vegas, but for the markets in which he plays. I like his character, almost campy, tongue in cheek, especially when he strikes his poses after an illusion, and I believe this is knowingly done. I just hope that when all is said and done he has not given up too much of himself to play Vegas! I liked the (thin) thread of good and evil in his European show, maybe this has had to be modified, watered down so to speak, to accomadate the wishes of American producers, and the addition of a "name" (LOL). Sorry guys, Pamela does nothing for me! Jazz/Reynold: Lots of folks put in their two cents on this board, some with experience, some without. One has to be open to all, evaluate where the comments/crtiques are coming from, and go from there. Hans, as my friend Alain C. found out when he opened the Paris, Paris, is not playing in his "normal" market, and as such has to expect critique based on the show he presents, the market, the ticket price, the originality etc. Lots of variables! Question: Would I like to work Vegas? Yes! Do I have a show that I could drop into a showroom there? No! My last comment: YOU GO HANS!!!!!!!!!!!!! And best of luck! Bair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I definately plan to go check out this show. Won't be until after June 29th when I return home to Vegas.
Here is something interesting - both the Aladdin Theatre for Performing Arts, venue to Hans' show, and the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex, venue to Steve Wyrick's show, are in the same hallway of the same mall just around the corner from one another. Wyrick's theater hasn't exactly been packing them in from my observations. Other acts have started perfoming in his venue at various times of day. I wonder how having 2 major illusion shows within yards of each other will go. --Jack |

A little off the topic, but did you see Pamela's deal? http://www.itricks.com had this to say:
"Pam, who just celebrated her 40th birthday, net a cool $3 million for her role as Klok’s assistant in his Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino summer show, The Beauty of Magic. " Vegas insider Michael Politz says, “This is an easy summer gig for Pam - 12 minutes per show, four shows weekly. She also gets a large suite and the use of a private jet for commuting to her Southern California home at her disposal as part of her magical deal.”

Hey Blair!
I found some bootleg video snippets from the show here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWe4IMZv5Yw You can give up on the video after about 1:20, because the guy with the camera is obviously a smart@ss by the name of Kid Cary, and goes around making fun of people at the post show buffet party.... That would be great, but not sure if there is a market for a show of the level of Han's, without him being a household name, as was Copperfield when he started touring. But hope someone will let us know if there is a tour planned.

On pages 8-9 of this month's M-U-M magazine (the official Society of American Magicians publication), John Moehring indicates he saw Klok's show and passed on the local papers' reviews that gave the show a grade of C- (barely passing) and their predictions that the show would close by the end of the summer. He didn't argue with either statement.
Moehring also gave a few details about the filming of the Criss Angel levitation effect that appeared in the third season premiere of Mindfreak on June 5. I won't spoil the surprise for you. Curt |

According to Hans Klok His show is a great success. I had to translate it but this kind of news is what we get over here in The Netherlands..
**************************************************************************** 13 July 2007 - Hans Klok doubles number of shows in Vegas It is six weeks after the premiere of the Las Vegas-show of the Dutch illiusionist Hans Klok and the visitor numbers swell. It goes considerable good, says to the blonde illusionist. we have started very quietly with four shows per week. That has been now built to six shows per week. And as from September, after again a period of six weeks, that will become 8 shows per week. And I have more great news but I will tell that in two weeks, because first contracts must be signed. But assume that I remain here longer than the three months which was intended in the first place.. The theatre is for three quarters filled. That is not bad in Las Vegas., continues Hans Klok. Yesterday there were 2100 people in the room where is room for 2800. The shows of The Phantom or The opera, a bit further down the road, is always half-full, whereas it is the best show on the strip. If I want to see Dion I can buy tickets the same day without any problems. That is how Vegas works. People live here by day, not like in the Netherlands where you must buy tickets six weeks in advance.. The rumours that the show is not doing well here are not true. It hurts me when they write that about me. Then it do not understand people. The show is becoming populair and better. Pamela Anderson and I it have done one after the other interviews. And on 31 July we even sit at Jay Leno. We are in the middle of a success in the making.. Klok recognises that in the first weeks many tickets for the show have been given away. To porters of hotels and to taxi drivers, which tell to the tourists what there is to do in the city. These people must become a type of ambassador. You have to work hard and do great advertising for success. We have started carefully. But it does go perfectly and getting better and better. Everyone can come and count the number of people that are coming to my show. But belief me: if a show in Las Vegas does not run well, then the casino wants you to get out and you are gone. It's all about the meney. You see the one show disappearing after the other.. Source: The telegraph. **************************************************************************** So how is Hans Klok doing over there in Vegas? EVI |

It is nice to see Hans try to explain how a "Vegas" show works and builds momentum. It is all in the P.R., word of mouth etc. Good to see an "insider" look at his thoughts on the situation. Best of luck to him. Thanks for the posting of it.
Anyone able to post a sequential listing of illusions he is performing in the show??? Where is an Arnold Furst when you need him?? Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

First No I have not see the show. I If Hans takes it out of Vegas this fall I will probably not see the show as I will not be back out untill next spring. However many of us are excited to see some one Going for the gold if you will out in Vegas. I hope that the show finds its voice and adds a new Grand show to our country. All of this adds to the buzz that trickles slowy out to the general public and generally helps us all.

I'll get a sequential order posted next week when I see the show again. I saw it on Friday night and I really liked it a lot.
The show is huge. It reminded me a lot of Siegfried & Roy, mixed with a little Copperfield. It takes places in the Aladdin Theatre for Performing Arts, smack in the middle of the Desert Passage (now called Miracle Mile) Mall. This was the only portion of the buildling not torn down when the original Aladdin hotel was demolished. The mall was built around it. If you go, park your car early, because you'll be walking a long way through the mall to get the the theater. The venue holds 5000 people or so - it is massive - Klok's show only sells 3 of the seating sections - orchestra 101, 102, and 103 (they might sell a couple balcony sections too, but I didn't see anyone up there on Friday). The available orchestra sections were roughly 2/3 full on Friday night. It has a cast of 14 dancers - half male, half female. Plus actors playing the parts of Young Hans Klok, his father, an evil queen, and Pamela Anderson. And, Hans. There is a large fake proscenium that has a giant hand on each side holding video screens. The entire show appears on the video screens, but it was not necessary to look at them, because there wasn't a bad seat available, all of the available seats had a wonderful view of the action. The lighting package for this show is outstanding. Dozens of moving lights all over the place, a Vari Lite rig, etc. The lighting design is spectacular - better than any other magic show I have ever seen. They even have rows of lights on upstage trusses that move up and down and angle themselves in all kinds of cool configurations throughout the show. The sound quality was excellent. I don't think I have ever heard better sound quality at a live show, in fact. It was absolutely crystal clear. It was a loud, pounding, pulsating soundtrack - and the music selection was great. Hans' voice was consistantly easily heard and understood - something that cannot be said for -any- of the other magic shows here in town except perhaps DC. As has been reported before, the show was -very- fast paced. And Hans' was very much all about the funny poses, wind blowing through the hair, etc. There are over 35 illusions -- BIG illusions -- in rapid order. The story line that weaves its way throughout the show really lends a Broadway show quality to the performance. It was very well pulled off and included the use of acting, and charming sets that incorporate both video projection and traditionally constructed set pieces. There are also numerous high energy dance numbers, sans magic, helping to tie it all together. A couple of the drawbacks now... the show was so high energy that at times, the audience was lost. Their applause could not be heard. At times they did not know if they should applaud or not. As a result it seemed that for some of the show the audience was not very into it. Hans tries to build rapport with the audience through some storytelling and joke-telling. I liked him - but it didn't go over very well with everyone. This building of a relationship with the audience needs development, because he is a very, very likable guy. The storyline is interesting but admittedly "cheesy," and while I liked it, it's questionable how much appeal there is for high levels of that in Las Vegas. Not everyone shares my liking of the cheese factor. As for Pamela Anderson... she is both good and bad. She is entertaining and does a good job. However the tone of the show changes a bit when she comes out. It's like we take a break from the story for a little while to have a little fun with Pamela. And the first thing Hans says, near the beginning of the show, when he addresses the audience: "I know what all you guys out there are thinking. Where's Pamela?" Which means that they know that some members of the audience are there to see Pamela Anderson and not the magic... so while it is cool that she helps sell tickets and brings people to see the magical arts, it also takes away from the true artistry of the show at the same time. It will be interesting to see what happens when she leave the show in early August. Will they replace her with someone else well known? A few notable illusions performed in the show... Blackstone's Floating Light Bulb, Floating Rose, Milk Lightbulb, Metamorphosis (3 variations), Hans sawed in half in a manner similar to DC's Death Saw, Lady Divided in 8ths, Asrah Levitation, Double Levitation, a cool Interlude sort of thing, Smoke Chamber Appearance... and I'll get a more complete list soon. All in all, a great show that I hope to see a few more times before it goes on tour or closes. I do hope it doesn't close, as it's a great show, a lot of fun, and good for magic in this town. If people want a real great magic show to take the family to, this is it. (But don't forget about that little show at the Greek Isles Hotel Casino "Resort and Spa" (yeah right), World's Greatest Magic Show!) --Jack http://www.jack-stephens.com |

Time is such an important factor here. If the show is good it will build an audience with enough time. The problem is how much time can the show producers afford to spend money on waiting for it to happen ? If they have confidence in the show they might be best to wait it out.
The Frewin show in Niagara had the same problem. The first season was a rough one as nobody new the show existed or if it was worthy. It came time to have faith in the product or bail and they stayed. Word of mouth on the quality built up and the show sells out regularly these days so the decision was a good one. We all know Hans is a great performer. Lets hope the producers stick it out and give the show a chance. Best, Tim |

I saw Greg Frewin's show back in December and I loved it. I went with a guy who had never seen a live magic show and he came out of it just thrilled.
It was snowing like a son of a gun - nearly impossible to drive and the drive back to the hotel in Buffalo was miserable. There were all of 12 people in the audience that night, and they still ran the show for us, and even met with us after the show to chat for a few minutes. A class act. --Jack |
