Hello Everyone,
OK…I already know that some people WILL NOT agree with what I am about to suggest. But here I go anyway. LOL I like the idea of using imagery along with Hypnotic Compliances during effects/routines. And in this thinking an idea ran through my head. If a performer were to make a statement to the audience something along the lines of, “I must warn those who are sitting out there in the audience….That in the past I have been know to influence….. those who have been just merely watching…. Watching what I was doing with the guess that I have up here on stage. Sometimes it may appear as if my volunteer have gone into a trace. And if I were to ask that person if they can see an object,….. MANY in the audience have actually hallucinated and CLAIM that they also were able to SEE this object. If this happens tonight…..to YOU….. Please do not become upset or nervous….. Due to the nature of what I am trying to accomplish…. sometimes the thoughts of my volunteer WILL project outward toward the audience and you may be able to pick them up, to caught them if you will. Please consider yourselves forth warn.” After planting this seed you begin you program. During the show you appear to place a subject/volunteer into a light trace. During this trace like state you ask if they would visualize certain things. And they comply and also confirm that they are seeing these objects in their mind. OK… Here we go….. What are your thoughts on actually making objects appear and vanish as you are talking to the trace induce volunteer? By making one or two objects appear and vanish would suggest to the audience that they have also hallucinated and seen the objects. Wouldn’t this give your performance a new dimension and allow the audience members to experience something of the surreal nature? Do you think this would enhance your mentalism program or destroy what you are trying to accomplish as a mentalist? Best Ray Noble |

Ray this is something I have wrestled with for a long time.
My Tower of Thought is one way to create that effect of the audience having a group experience. I think that your earlier idea of using three flight would work well and also effects such as card under glass or any effect that creates the impression that one is not quite able to pay attention or that gives them the feeling of being a bit off. I guess you gather from my response I think it can enhance when well considered and scripted. -Jim

There is a large literature on Guided Imagery therapy that links to what you are talking about - also for example...I think the fellow who put out Creating Impact has on his webside a sliced open lemon pic - and yep, I can feel the sour taste just looking at it... in fact, I am sure many people sue the lemon image/thought to demonstrate the power of imagination/suggestion...
However, I haven't used the vanishing / non vanishing or any more powerful "magic" effects up front as I like to build up to it - I am often using power point slides and I use very powerful graphics and images to set the mood... I always wondered if you do something too magic at the beginning... you can 1) cause confusion in the theme you are presenting 2) make them think this is all a "trick" However, doing it for the audience as a whole BEFORE when you are tossing out light suggestions might work - just like many hypnotists do use a mentalism effect to demo something strange and interesting before they bring up the volunteers... So, like J im... its something I wrestle with too.

The problem with this is that EVERYONE is apparently affected, which makes it more likely that none of them were, and that it was just a trick.
I have several things along these lines in one way or another, but the only group effect I do is a routine where everyone experiences deja vu, but it takes a lot of confidence to even try! Good luck.... |
