This topic tends towards the nonsense.
It's like arguing which is better, a pickup or a car? It is a very subjective choice. Props work. Pack small works. Pack large works. Ad nauseum. Both the Copperfields as well as the Jay Marshall's delight audiences. Am sure folks will still be arguing over this area ten years from now.

When I started reading this thread I realised that the reason I take so many props for my shows is because I have so much fun with them. I have routines that also involve lots of fun, and no props, but for me, having props gives me a direction. I see the same kids over many times, so I only like to include ONE "packs small plays big" routine in each show. That way, I have a brand new show every time I see them.
I will be doing a briefcase show tomorrow, for a Teddy Bear's Picnic, and it will be nice to have such a small kit to carry. (case/stand, guitar and PA) The show will still be big and fun, but I won't have any large props. I'll counterbalance that by finishing off the show making a HUGE balloon model. But come the weekend and the Birthday parties, it's back to the flight cases, and the full works. Yes, it's my choice - that's what I WANT to do. |

I don't want anyone feeling like this is an argument or contest to see who can carry in less stuff.
I am in total agreement with Danny...no prop is going to make you good. It is your patter and personality that will make you a great performer. |

I have Cups and Balls, Ninja Rings, Rope and Scissors, Cards, and Balloons. Is that a good show?

Thanks Danny, I appreciate it. |

Hello Bill, I loved the stand up performence pieces as well!
I would love to see another three! Do you have any plans to release more? Will you still release more from that artist Merlin? All the best Bill ,Mark

Mark,
Merlin's Rings DVD is coming out in September (DVD release parties are being planned for two magic shops here in Toronto). Merlin's Pirate Magic DVD is coming out in October/November. I personally have two projects in the near future: -a booklet that will be ready for a fall lecture tour entitled "Cocktail Card Magic". -both the Stand-Up for Kids and Close-Up For Kids DVDs will be re-released sometime in the fall in deluxe editions with tons of extra performances, routines, TV appearances, tips, etc. Other tricks that will be sold separately are in the process of manufacturing and I have no idea when they will (officially) see the light of day. Thanks for your interest & support (even if I do have a small case!), Bill |

I found the "perfect case" at a local music store yesterday. It is basically an oversized briefcase designed to put a mixer in. The entire thing is padded to protect your stuff. Perfect!
The following picture does not do it justice at all. You simply place it on a stand, open it up just like briefcase and you are all done. The top will stay open as well so just put a sign on the front, which of course is what I did. I was able to fir my entire library show in it which has quite a few props in it this year. Wow! It is 17 x 24 inches and the price was only $69.99...a great deal. Here it is.... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controll......u=429599 |

@Frank
You have Bill's Merlin DVD's that are not due to be released until Sep-Nov? Posted: Jun 21, 2007 3:14pm @Danny I fear you are setting up a false-dichotomy between props and magicians. For magicians it is not an either/or arguement, but a both/and. Entertainment helps the props, and props help the entertainment.

Karol,
Fair enough, and good point. The two are certainly not mutually exclusive. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! @ Karol 'Merlins classic workers' is the set that came out last year Frank is
referring to. And the good news is that there is more from this brilliant performer with thank's to that other brilliant performer -Bill Abbott. I enjoyed the discussion. Some tables come in two parts so the top part could be placed on a chair for a smaller show. Both parts for a bigger show!

Alright guys....
I did 3 shows yesterday using my new setup / case and I must tell you that it was the best ever. Even though my library show does use quite a bit of props this year, I still managed to get everything into the one case and do a great show. No more tables with props everywhere...just me and my case. I would not go back for anything! Todd |

It's a great feeling Todd. It also allows you to do more shows in a day and still keep the quality up. I have no problem with people working big or small I just know for me one case is the only way to fly.

Congradulations, it must be a relief to know it is all about you, and not your props.

It is a great feeling! When my last library program was over yesterday, I was in my car and on the road within 2 minutes. Awesome!
Posted: Jun 25, 2007 6:33pm FYI- I did 3 birthday parties this weekend. No more live animals, no floating the b-day child, just a great show out of a single case. I got a tip from 2 out of the 3 so I must be doing something right. I am able to walk in, open the case, set a few things up and start within one minute. Wow! I would like to think all of those who had comments on the thread. I realize that not everyone wants to do a briefcase show like some of us and that is great- for them. I now know that it can be done and that an audience does not feel like they are being robbed due to a small amount of props. Rock on! |

Well done Todd.
I perform out of a small suitcase, one small box, and use a small folding table. The only way I could get down to one suitcase is to get a larger suitcase! Which is someting I must do, because then it would definitely only be one trip to and from the car. I am not an animal person (ie I don't like them) so I would never use animals, and could not be bothered with the hassle. Warren |

Warren...look a few posts up and click on the link that I provided for an awesome case. It is basically a bigger version of a briefcase. It is very lightweight and I have my entire library show in it which is my biggets show.
