Greetings All, I'm curious, what did y'all use to start marketing yourself/your services to the world when you began to perform? Business Cards,Flyers,Postcards? I know this is a marketing question, but Tricky business isn't getting my question answered....How do I start to market myself on the cheap so I can re-invest into my show and marketing? Thanks for all of your help!

Magically Yours

First step, get 500 business cards printed up at vistaprint and give them to every single person you know (and give extras to people who know people)..

Second step is to put up a web page. (at a minimum it needs to include a picture of you, what you're selling, and how they can reach you to buy it)

What type of show are you promoting? Kids show? Closeup?

I recommend to doing your first show for a neighbor or friend of the family at a discounted rate. (They will also be a more forgiving audience)

Get yourself seen as a magician, find some benefit shows to do. Carry magic with you, simple tricks you can carry in your pocket, do them for waitresses in resturants your frequent, the girl at the dry cleaning counter (don't if there is a line), bank teller (again not if there is a line) for people standing in line at stores with you, etc. Get yourself known and recognized as a magician. You would be surprised how many people you do such tricks for can turn shows for you. If you specialize in some sort of show, like birthday parties, etc, you might talk to a manager at a local party store, sometimes they have bulliten boards or keep lists of entertainers to refer to customers who inquier. Put up business cards in coin-laundries, grocery stores or any place that has a bulliten board for such. Once you get a few shows, word of mouth should help you. If you have a local "garage sale" type newspaper generally ads are cheap you might put a small ad in it offering ur services.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

All good ways to go one I would add which I use and its come up trumps, is at friend birthdays or special occasions’ say to them ill do a little routine for you as a present. I do a trick for them something like ambitious card, card to pocket with a signed card. I do this with every ones attaineon it only last 5 mins max. Then you put your self out do a small close up set if asked to other gust passing out cards as you go. So in total you have only preformed for 30min max then I put every thing a way in my inside zipped pocket were they stay. And then I drink heavily and join in the chaos.

Ive done this when ive needed a bit of extra cash and ive got some good bookings from it.
Enjoy your magic,

and let others enjoy it as well!

G'day,

School newsletters often let you advertise in them for free. Also print an illusion on the reverse of you business card. People will show your card to many others just to show them the illusion. Menza puzzles or some eye trickery are all ideas for a print on your card.

Marketing itself is an art, separate and apart from the art of magic. There are many books on marketing that you can read, and they are not written only for magicians. If you don't have much money, go to the library and borrow some marketing books. Study marketing the same way you learn magic: avidly. Take notes. Spend time reviewing how other entertainers market themselves. Marketing is an ongoing process: you must continually market yourself all the time, during your act and between your performances. After some time hopefully your efforts will eventually pay off, and people will naturally think of you the next time they are looking for someone who does what you do. Ultimately, word of mouth, i.e. referrals, which don't cost a penny, are the gold standard which you hopefully will rely upon solely to keep you busier than you need to be, doing what you desire and charging what you feel you are worth. Until that time, you must work hard to separate yourself from the pack and find some way to stand out as a professional performer who shows up on time, well prepared, with a solid routine that entertains and is worth the fees that you charge.
Good luck!

Hi Adam.

Whenever somebody asks me about marketing themselves I always give ONE answer.

Watch Jay Sankey's THE REAL WORK ON RESTAURANTS AND BARS!

It's like a crash course in marketing by Jay based on his REAL LIFE experiences.

Where do you live? Small town USA? Metropolis?
