Ha, no, not holding my breath for 3 weeks...good one though.
Rappel, I'd love to see some pictures of the bag over head rope escape, sounds interesting. Did someone actually secure the bag around your head or was it just placed over you? My problem is I get bored too easily and having been doing the 100 ft rope challenge, straitjacket, different chain and rope tie escapes for so long, I need something new. Hence where the pool comes into play. Hopefully, if all goes well, I'll have some pictures and a video to post up here. We're working on underwater camera ideas, but don't want to buy an underwater camera case. I may have to go ghetto and use a plastic bag, Ziplock brand of course so we can see the green and yellow strips connect and know for sure it is sealed : ) |

Ok, I finally had a chance to put these together. Bostonzero asked to see some pics from the escape. My friend and EA, Margerette helped me with the plastic bag over my head. Margerette did a handcuff escape before me. My good friend Mr. Magic Dick Williams was also there for support. Dick holds the Worlds Record for the longest running TV magic show in history, 23 years!! 1966-1989. By the way, I could breath fine under the bag. (thanks again Margerette) Facing me are about 200 people in line to go into the haunted house. When I present the escape, the challenge is to get out in half the time it takes to tie me.

Rappel, It just struck me, I (and most escape artist I think) always hear of the 100 foot rope escape, why did you choose 75 foot rope escape for when you were going to do the underwater escape? I didn't know if it would be less time consuming or was it to try to make it easier....
When I do my street shows on Friday's I actually use a 50 foot piece of rope instead of my usual 100 foot rope just becuase it saves some time and the people watching won't have to sit through 5 minutes of someone tying me up. Didn't know if you had a similar reason. Nice pics by the way, I like that you have a nice big ground spotlight on you, good tihnking for the night time. I have to stop my street shows around 8:15pm on Fridays because it gets just a bit too dark for the people to see my magic props and for me to see my juggling clubs and balls. |

You can tell your audience a 5foot length of rope is 10, a 20foot one is 60 ....... They just don't know (well most won't anyway). Ok this is a 100ft bit of rope and show them one as long as your arm ..... May get a raised eyebrow.

Dave, I prefer telling my date how my rope is 10 inches... hopefully she won't notice the difference either.

Mate this is why women are so bad at reverse parking...... Men are always (not me though!) telling women that this:- <---------------------------------------> is 8 inches....
I have "antidisestablishmentarianism" tattooed on mine ....... Unfortunately they had use 2point font |

Dave, that is true about saying what length it is and being off by even 10 or 20 feet may go unnoticed... haha, 2 point font.
Jay, that's awesome about the 10 inch rope, too funny. So I tried the 100 ft rope escape yesterday 3 times, kept failing. By the time I got out of the rope I was panicing and had to come up for air before I could unchain myself. So we eventually cut the rope to about 60 or 70 feet and then I was able to do the escape. I also had the key on one of those rings that sink to the bottom of the pool, I was getting nervous searching for it, so I had to hold the ring in my hand. This way, after I got out of the rope, I just leaned down and unlocked myself from the chains and cinderblock. 4th time is a charm. My ankles are so swollen and my upper arms are soo bruised. But I'm glad I can now say I did it and it's over with. |

So Bostonzero, are you going to do it for the public?

Rappel, I did film it and took a bunch of pictures, but as far as a public underwater escape, not sure where I would even do that. I don't have a water tank or anything like that. Unless it was at a public pool somewhere. I will be doing a crane straitjacket escape in a month at a fair, but as far as the underwater escape, I don't know...

This sounds more like a stunt for a TV special.

Sounded like a stunt for a TV special but looked nothing like one.
Not impressed - sorry but it didn't do it for me..... |

I saw the video, it was... alright. I have to imagine that seeing it on edited video and watching it live were very different. On the video there was very little to build tension. Live it probably stretched a bit longer. Was that a practice session? I did not hear applause when you got out and that is why I am asking. There is noting wrong with your stunt. You look well practiced, comfortable , and in command. The rest would be for the benefit of the audience, so if this is a practice session, it does not matter that it is not there.

I spent 3 weeks practicing holding my breath and my longest is for 1:34 minutes. The underwate escape I only practiced for 2 days in different sections. IE, Just unlocking the lock, managing the cinder block, escapeing fromt he rope, finding the key, unwrapping the chains. I failed the first 4 attempts at doing it all together and had to swim to the surface with the cinderblock still attached, go back down, then unlock it.
The one on the video that I eventually got out of went waaay to fast. I did it in just under 30 seconds. There were 5 people there along with the camera man and guy to my left. I thought I was going to be underwater much longer but after not doing it the first four times and then finally doing it. I had no energy left to do it again. I came out of the rope really fast, which was what was causing me to panic the first few times. So I do want to do it again, an make it last quite a bit longer. (When I surface you can hear the few people there clap and cheer) but it wasn't a big crowd by any means. Just some people at a cookout. |

Sorry to dissapoint, hopefully the next one will be better. Like I said, I was so tired and sore by the time I actually did the escape that I couldn't keep going and film a longer, more suspenseful one. I had a lot of friends and family asking to see it, so I put that video together.

I think the point someone mentioned about cutting away was laid .... You have no idea how long anything took, and cutting away suggests editing which in turn suggests cheating. Look forward to something you are more happy about releasing.

I was expecting to see it filmed under the water, A lot of what you can see from the top is just light reflection when your under. I have a simple water tight bag for a vid camera that goes under and cost very little. That would have been better to see you under that the over shot lookig in.
Impossible is just another level of difficulty

What type of rope were you using? And was that 75 ft.? From the video, it did not look like a lot of rope. Good luck on your next escape, but I would be more planned out with your camera shots.

Hello again, The video never cuts away at all. The only thing I didn't have on film was the part of me getting tied up, that's why I put pictures in at the beginning that another friend had taken. We originally filmed me getting tied up the first two attempts, but that was with the 100 feet of rope covering my entire body, I didn't want to use that video and then cut to me jumping in the water with clearly less than what I was originaly tied up with. Sadly, I did have an underwater camera, I used my flip mini HD camera which is now broken becase the ziplock bag apparently got a hole in it somewhere. It actually looked really good and super clear underwater when I watched the first couple clips back, but after the final one, the guy I had doing the underwater filming told me the bag was full of water. Now the camera doesn't turn on and the screen is murky underneath the glass.
That guy is no longer going to be a camera man for me. : ( I will redo the escape in about three weeks, I'm still getting over an ear infection from it (too much water in the ears), my ankles are still slightly swollen and very tender from the chain and I have a fairly large cut on my left shin from the second time I tried and went below the cinderblock so it cut me when it got to the bottom. This escape is a logistical nightmare without the nice, good equipment. I think a weight belt and ankle weights would be better... |
