I've known quite a few. Only one didn't live the stereotype. All were proud of their heritage. Their seance work is just so good, their cold reading superb, and their counseling skills far exceed those of most of the mental health professionals I've ever met.

Yes, the term "Gypsy" does come from "Egypt," but the term is a misnomer. It was mistakenly believed that the people came from Egypt, but they actually did migrate from India. As Declan indicated, the language is related to Indian languages and they retain cultural traits that also point to an origin in the Indian peninsula. They are a fascinating people who are in danger of vanishing as distinct cultures.

Fine. but it is still more than probable, in fact almost definite that indeed egyptians crossed that lil plop of water that seperates italy and egypt and migrated into their communities, bringing their own culture dialect etc. it is further likely that said egyptians melded and blended with the proposed india gypsies, being that they were both of the minority--as this happens in almost all communites--even the slaves oft' joined with the native americans..etc..etc..

either, I just smoked a hollow drawing cigar, thus ive been gipped. Smile

I agree, Baba, that Egyptians came to Europe. After all, the Greeks ruled Egypt -- the Ptolemies. It is certainly not impossible that Egyptians and Rom peoples exchanged cultural elements. It is also possible that some of them intermarried, especially if they were forced into lower socio-economic status. However, I think it doubtful that intermarriage would have been extensive given the Gypsy tendency to maintain their closed society. Then again, I am not an expert.

It just occurred to me that it is possible that intermixed families could have developed their own social groups not easily distinguished from the others. All I know is the little I have read.

I gotta side with Bill and Hou_dini:
The Egyptians are credited with a bit too much - forebearing the gypsies, creating the Tarot, etc.. I'll even bet the Chinese beat them to the punch in making mummies. Smile

I don't believe any of the Gypsies in my family were of Egyptian descent or influence. Everything in our makeup that is non-European points to an Asian influence rather than African/Egyptian.

We've never considered the term Gypsy to be a slap or a slur, but I personally find the term "gyp" as offensive as similar references that imply cheating or cheapness as a part of Hebrew business practices.

Unfortunately, most of the culture did not get passed down to my parents' generation, so many of the stories, culture, and history are unknown to most of my generation as well.

Some of us "went legit" and became mental health professionals. Legally, there is no substitute for credentials.

Or the Chinese, Mesopotamians, The Mound Builders (Mesoamericans), Romans, Nubians, or Greeks.

Sometimes Pyramids were built by non-Egyptians...especially those found in the Americas!

Mummy? Let's wrap that one up!

I wasn't aware of your heritage, Chris. I don't think you fit any stereotype!

The Lithuanian Gypsies say, that 'stealing has been permitted in their favour by the crucified Jesus, because the Gypsies, being present at the Crucifixion, stole one of the four nails. Hence when the hands had been nailed, there was but one nail left for the feet; and therefore God allowed them to steal, and it is not accounted a sin to them.
I tell ya an excuse from the mouth of god himself...lol...

no one is taking anything away from ANY other culture. I celebrate them all; I glory in them all. I was referring to the freaking theory of ALIENS building the pyramids.

my answer to the post is--to some it is a slur, to others its not. just like any other label.

I agree any term may be taken as a slur. It is all in the intention of the speaker. The same word spoken by someone of a certain race to his friend becomes a terrible thing when spoken in hate by someone else.

Myst, on the contrary, I believe the Egyptians are not given enough credit. Early Egyptologists tended to denigrate Egyptian culture from a very ethnocentric point-of-view. (They couldn't have accomplished that; they weren't White Anglo-Saxon Protestants like ourselves.) This attitude persists to some extent even today.
