I wasn't aware of your heritage, Chris. I don't think you fit any stereotype!

Harley,

My sister fits the stereotype much better than I do. In many ways we are opposite sides of the same coin.

My non-performance persona is part choice, part camoflage.

Slim, I like to think I made that up, but I really don't know where it came from. I've been using it (over and over, according to my (adult) kids) ever since I can remember.

Myst, on the contrary, I believe the Egyptians are not given enough credit. Early Egyptologists tended to denigrate Egyptian culture from a very ethnocentric point-of-view. (They couldn't have accomplished that; they weren't White Anglo-Saxon Protestants like ourselves.) This attitude persists to some extent even today.

Huh ? I've never come across anyone (or any Discovery/Science/History show) that exhibited that attitude towards Eygpt. Everyone in the world is amazed by the pyramids, the Sphinx, the Valley of the kings, mummfication, and their overall culture/city building/technology.
They just didn't give rise to either the Gypsys or Tarot cards. I was sorta kidding.

When I was in Romania several years ago, our Romanian guide made it quite clear that gypsies in his country were thieves and criminals and that justified Vlad Dracula's mass killings of the gypsies. The guide said that after Dracula's reign of terror against the gypsies, thievery stopped.

Gypsies , according to histories of their culture, prefer the term Romani because they believe they are descended from the Romans of antiquity-- a claim not substantiated by historians. They believe themselves to be the only free people.

The country is beautiful and it is a great place to visit. In the countryside, products are very cheap by American and western European standards.
