Just got it. OMG It is very well thought out. It can play to any age/size audience, they don't even have to speak the same language. It packs VERY flat and plays VERY big! It isn't too hard to do. It does have a few angle problems, but nothing that can't generally be overcome - and he explains how.
For adults I will use it as an opener where I grow from the box. In kid's shows where they say "the magic word I tell them not to say" and I shrink . . . and then someone saves me by saying the right magic word. I also plan to use "Gut Buster" "Finger Fantasies" and the arm twist with it. I hope this is a very limited edition! |

Anyone knows how limited Shrinker is? As of now, there seems to be 50 in the present batch for this week. Will there continue to be small numbers of Shrinker made in the future?

I was hesitant about this effect because I was very dissapointed with gutbuster, but now with all these reviews, I may just have to pick it up.

Sounds interesting. But I wear "breeches" that come down to just below my knee. I wear long socks (actually stockings) over my calfs. Would this mean I couldn't perform the illusion?
Also, folks have mentioned angle problems. How easy would it be to perform in an intimate setting? Sounds like mainly a stage effect, or street effect with similar angle problems to the Balducci Levitation? |

As for the other Café member who didn't like GutBuster I will say.... what? LOL. I thought GutBuster was incredible and the different ways of performing it made it even better. As for angle problems there really aren't any problems as long as you pick the appropiate way to perform this illusion. Andrew shows several ways to present Shrinker and angles are taken care of in various ways on the DVD. |

I'm sure this is a very well thought-out effect, as that is Andrew Mayne's M.O. But really, I don't get why this is causing such a stir. In my opinion, it's a cute stunt, not a magic effect. Good for entertainment and a chuckle, but I can't imagine anyone not immediately understanding the way this is done. I'm probably just over thinking this, but I'm still left scratching my head over some of the posts I'm reading. In any event, kudos to Andrew Mayne for developing this fun effect!
Some think Houdini used trap doors in his act, but he was just going through a stage.

I'm just curious as to why so many are treating this like it's 'magic' rather than a comedy bit or an entertaining stunt. On 2007-06-28 11:20, Majestic12 wrote:

However, in all due repsect, would you also consider sawing a woman in half, stretching a peson double in length, or dividing a person is separate sections using a Zig Zag a "comedy bit or an entertainment stunt" as well? I think, if used properly, it Shrinker can be and is very magical. I have ordered it but have not received it yet. But I think it has a great deal of potential as being a fantastic magic effect at a very low cost without using bulky and expensive equipment. I would personally use it to start as a small person and then grow large. You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I respect that. However, I do believe Shrinker is very magical. Hi Michael, thanks for that feedback.

Magic (when performed well) leaves the spectator with the feeling of "how the heck could that possibly be done?!) Do you feel that an effect like Shrinker falls into that category? If so, then I'm definitely missing something. I hope I'm not coming across negative about the effect, it's wonderful, I just don't understand how this can possibly make anybody wonder how it's done...

Dear Gene,
Thanks for the reply. I would not perform this effect to shrink and then to grow. If performed that way then it will, in my opinion, lessen the magical qualities of the effect and make it more, as you stated, an entertainment or comedy bit. I think its greatest(magic) potential is to come out of a box or crate or even from behind a curtain as a "small" person and then in accordance with the character of the performer, to then grow. I think it would make a very nice magical beginning to a show. It would not work if your audience knows you or have seen you previously perform. However, in that case, you can shrink from regular size to smaller size by using perhaps someone hitting you over the head with a very large comedy hammer or some other device that causes you to shrink. I just think if used in the right and creative way, shrinker can be not only entertaining and funny but also magical. After I receive it and I will give you a better opinion of it. Take care, Michael

I'd really like to see this performed live, to get a true impression of the impact it makes. It seems to me also, that this is a "stunt",and if it looks convincing, then it certainly merits the modest cost. But I've encountered too many effects like this that in practical terms, for the busy performer, are just not workable items.
It's claimed that this effect can be performed with tricky angles - if there were a video demo of a presentation showing some of the more difficult angles, it would be helpful. |

Mine arrived yesterday.
I have only watched the DVD so far - but the appearance from the box with the growing is very very cool and for me the best version on the DVD. Hopefully this weekend I can give it a go..... |

I would agree that from the box, starting out small and growing may be the most magical looking.
Gene, I mentioned in my review above that I don't believe that the demo video that he has posted really does this effect justice. The Demo video shows both effects of shrinking and growing. (Andrew, you may consider changing your public post with different video, such as coming out of the box, although then you may have to call it "Grower" rather than "Shrinker" ) Other performance ideas that Andrew does on the DVD look much more impressive (and hysterical for that matter). If you start tall, then shrink, then grow, could audience members figure out what you are doing? They may think they have an idea or parial idea, but there will be no way for them to duplicate how it looks. You really do look like a person of small stature that can walk forward. Andrew also mentions in this DVD (similiar to many of his other creations of shocking reveals) that this is a fairly quick visual effect. You don't stand around for a long time in a shrunken state. You get the shocked reaction you want, then get back to normal. You don't give much time for them to reverse-engineer the effect. This can be said about many of Andrew's effects that can be most shocking, such as Bisection or Facelifter. Timing and context around this effect will be what sells this and make it a magical effect as opposed to a puzzle/stunt.

Fun obvious use...tie it in with the "Head Shrinker" (you know, the spinning spiral that makes it look like you head shrinks..) Start by having your head grow, then head shrink, then have them look at your entire body...perform Shrinker...and then walk off the stage in your new physical state (or have a stooge selected from audience perform Shrinker...)

When he shrinks in the demo, it looks like it would be a good setup for Peter Loughran's Elevator.

Good evening.
Having purchased this effect, I must say that those that do not have it are not able to grasp it's potential. I wasn't, when I first saw the demo.I thought of ways of doning it( I was wrong, way wrong), I thought of how I might use this, once again, now seeing how this was thought out, it has a lot more potential then I thought. This is a real mind twister for the specs. if used right. Andrew tells you all the ways to use it right. I have never been dissapointed with any effect from Mr. Mayne and this might be one of his best. I'm not even sure how I might work this into my routine. When the time is right, this will kill. JPK
