What would you like to SEE in a TV Special on Magic and Mentalism?
There has been much criticism of what is currently being marketed. What would be better? I'm asking this since Kyleen and I will be meeting with a producer again this year to talk over a TV Pilot. What would YOU like to see...What would the Layman like to see, and what would a 12 year old do to WOW the public. Of course I have my own ideas, but I'm sure I haven't thought of everything. Sometimes I'm sure I can't see the forrest for the trees. I don't know much about target audiences and the like. I know that many of you do. Thanks Dave No Methods Needed

I would love to be able to see something that tells a story. I am tired of seeing the exact same formula when it comes to magic on TV. Performer finds a volunteer- askes them if they want to see something cool, weird, strange - does whatever effect - gives a stupid look of mystery or smuggness(I can't even tell anymore) Rinse - Repeat. I find that pointless.
I can't really articulate it into words I guess, but it should be something where the effects have a purpose. A goal at the end of the show. Yeah I know it's a very general idea. Good luck with it. My show would most likely involve superheroes. But that is just me.
Will you, won't you, ESP with me?

I hear people saying that Criss Angel is all set-up and fake to explain what he's been doing, so it would be interesting if you could figure out a way to make it seem very legitimate, very fair. I've been approached to do a pilot and I thought of something sexy, mysterious, fun and interesting to watch, that way people would have a good time watching regardless of what they thought of the magic and mentalism involved. If I do this pilot, I would do a more psychic type performance, some readings, mysterious effects, things like that. For a 12 year old I think mysterious David Blaine type mindreading on the street and make sure you focus and capture the very legitimate reactions.

Too bad there isn't a Magic Cable Network? All of our favorites could have their own show, as well as amateurs, (no magic lessons aired though, obviously) and Eugene Burger & Max Maven could do a spooky Weekend-Update style news program? haha Speaking of cable, a little while ago I saw on Comcast's ON Demand (if you go into the Vegas tab), Gerry McCambridge did an 8 minute routine for the host, and there were other magicians on there as well, (Did anybody else see these?) The Vegas tab is still there, but they removed the McCambridge footage-- But back to your question, Dave, yes, definately a Magic Cable Network MCN haha!

Id like to see something without the use of camera tricks, cuts, and stooges. Really that's all I ask (you hear that Angel)! Mentalism is tough on tv as most assume that things are setup being less visual in performance. Id personally offer half a million dollars to anyone who could prove it was setup, and they will see thing same things in live performance tour as they do in the tv show.
Someone could easily set up a myspace style website where each magician gets his own page about himself and can post videos or episodes as well as other fun stuff. You could have channels that randomly played videos like tv shows do. Online broadcast is pretty much free for the most part. don't think a television channel would have the viewership needed. |

I would like to see something that would not be considered mentalism.

Right now I offer 25,000.00 in my stage show, but if I was on tv, Id make my case with a large check or case full of cash. Especially with the stooge and video using freaks we have to watch these days, you have to prove your point. |

My idea for a show is a little different; more of a Psychic Entertainer hosted talk show. Involve the audience in bits and game show events, have guests some entertainers, authors, and down to earth, regular people. It would explore seasonal topics, relationships, strange experiences, powers of the mind, and many other topics. Kind of like a little bit of Kreskin, a little Dick Cavet, a bit of Merv Griffen, and a smattering of Opera and Jerry Springer (early Springer, not the current exploitation show), and maybe a bit of Ellen.
It is a project I really would love to pursue, but I don't have the "looks" for television. Tony |

Opera and Jerry Springer I bet those two words have never been that close in a sentence.. ever. I think The Bean should travel the country stopping in to visit with mindful entertainers of unique bent, perhaps even featuring a certain wine drinking telepath out in California. |

Not since Oprah and Jerry went head to head in the ratings 15 years ago.
Sorry for the typo in the previous post, I meant Oprah, but Opera would not be bad either. |

Have you seen the new John Riggs DVDs? I think we all agree John is a mentalism biggie.
On his latest DVD set, volume 2 I believe, he says that the worst thing you can do is ask other mentalists what to do in your show or act. He says he is no longer affiliated with the PEA or any other groups and that he never asks other performers for advice. I remember when the Wonder Wizards online group was about three years old. Derren Brown joined the list. This was before "Trick of the mind". He posted that he thought mentalists should not get together and talk about effects and craft but about life and experiences viewed from a slightly artistic view. Derren posted a long letter with his views on art and life and what qualified as art and what didn't [no Mad Jake, a Gazzo pouch did not make the list you knucklehead] This post preceded his book "Absolute Magic". A few of the members replied that his post was difficult to understand, but they enjoyed his book "Pure Effect" and what would he use to open a stage show for a corporate function of 500 people. and so on... "The Art of Magic" was a good special. It brought a lot more besides magic and mentalism. I do review the videos from time to time.

I want a worldwide trek for the inexplicable.
Penn and Teller came real close for me with those Canadian specials..The Magic and Mystery Tour. They went to China, Egypt and India and tracked down remote performers. Was gritty and entertaining! |

I actually agree for the most part with both of them. But I do think that a small group of friends can help if they give objective feedback on performance. (I think Derren Brown agrees with that as he does have a small circle of friends and advisors). When I watched John's DVD and heard him make those statements, I nodded in agreement. I remember a few instances where the local magi gave me advice. But fortunately/unfortunately, I understand where I want to take things and can dismiss the advice that contradicts where I want to go. To be honest, the only critiques that matter are those of the real world audience. If it works for them and for me, it is right. Tony |
