In my last post way back in March 2007, I was searching for improvements in my performance involving my 7 year old son. Refer http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......&forum=7
The members of magic Café forum gave me tips and suggestions that no book could provide. I worked on their ideas and in May 2007, I created a routine for my son that's simple but packed big. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each one of you. http://www.furnitalia.com/Temp/Part1.wmv What I learnt was, it's just not the illusion that matters. It's the way you present the illusion, the music and how you time your performance to the music. If budget is a constraint, using a carboard box can sometimes make wonders. Like for the recent performance, I wanted to introduce the magician(my son). But the stage had no curtains in the back, no control over lighting. I referred to Mark Wilson's book and the Grants Illusions using Cartons. Picked up a carton from a furniture dealer's trash box, bought spray paint from Home Depot and created the most simplistic intro. It worked and the audience loved it. For the music, I used the music from the latest Indian Movie that was a craze. And to add an extra effect, I introduced my 2 year old daughter. And then we worked on the music for the timing in the end. I think I used every input from the members of this forum and the end result...very very satisfying. Do you have any recommendations for illusions using carton boxes that you have performed and it did produce satisfying results ? |

That was pretty good, but I think that the illusion should be performed much faster. Where is part 2?

There is an old book by UF GRant called Victory Carton illusions.. that is a whole book on illusions made from cardboard.
I'm not going to say they're all good.. but it's a good place to start for a young budding illusionist with limited recources. |

Part 1 was the introduction. Continuing with it is part 2 where the simple flower production and cut and restored rope was performed using one audience member. Watch it at http://www.furnitalia.com/Temp/Part2.wmv
The background music is again an indian song. The song is a romantic song teasing a girl. I do have the Victory Carton Illusions. But, to experiment on a large audiance makes me uneasy. That's why I wanted to know if someone else has performed an illusion using cartons. It need not be today, but even if you have performed way back in your early days. |

The cardboard box illusion is only 1 min 35 seconds. It was so tough to find music to match the performance routine. So I had to edit the music using audacity, then patch the bits seamlessly. In terms of duration, for an illusion like this, what would you recommend as the ideal duration? I know its not a standard routine, but from what you saw, how long would you have performed this?

I would speed it up and add another assistant, if you can, to show the parts and move it up closer to the audience for the final production.
Jim Gerrish has several PVC Pipe illusions you might consider in his books on my site, but if you want to stick with cardboard boxes, you can build many of the same illusions from that material as well. To get more out of your current illusion, consider painting a red spot (like you have on the roof) on each of the yellow sides, and a yellow spot on each of the red sides. When the box is assembled, rotate it (as you move it closer to the edge of the stage) and remove the spot on each side, producing a contrasting large silk from the opening and leaving a black hole (the assistant just has to stay low) in each side. At the end, the assistant can stick his arms through the holes first and just stand up with the box sides dangling from his arms. But speed up the pace and get rid of the kid with the wand- it slows down the action and is unnecessary (just my opinion, of course).

I think that he should make his appearance about 4 seconds after the box is put together.

Spellbinder, you really think out of the box. Thanks for your input. I shall be redoing this in the month of August at the California State Fair in Sacramento. I shall work on the speed as per dpe666.
Let me take a look at http://www.magicnook.com. I remember having purchased the newspaper tear long ago. Maybe then I didn't have these requirements. Thanks again for all your inputs. |

I have also been looking at using Grant's victory carton illusion to produce superman for my kids parties. I take it this effect is still as effective today as it was years ago. Or has the over exposure of magic pushed us again to come up with new ideas and made this effect more transparent to the audience?
Anyone out there using this and getting great reactions? Just curious. Kex |

Sudheer-
Per your June posted clip. Nice start with an illusion presentation! And you got the lesson, it's the presentation not the props. As you go forward, consider not painting the boxes, leave them as an "everyday" object. Perhaps a plot where you miss your son while shopping for a new fridge, then he appears in the store warehouse from empty stove and fridge boxes. Very cute with the little girl, and nice ta-da moment with your son's appearance. The fact you kept the routine simple and moving was very good. There are dozens of other simple options to use your son in future shows. As your budget grows, take a look at what Creative Magic offers. Feel free to PM me when you're thinking of new things to add. Good work thus far, Magically, Walt |
