Hi
I've just bought LJ's Telling Tales http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......start=30 It has a short but very interesting essay about Magicians building Myths and Legends about themselves and mentions Jimmy Grippo The premise for the two effects is about this legend building type of effect I find this type of approach very interesting I searched Google and the Café for anything about Jimmy but the only stuff I could find is this "This is only my opinion but there is little theatrical value in producing large numbers of coins. Maybe you can explain the reason to me. What does it give your spectators? What does it leave them with? Do you, Like Jimmy Grippo leave the coins on the table when you're done? That has impact. You are giving them something you apparently created from nothing." Here is an other good link http://www.ring2100.org/jimmy.html this is all Jimmy, and, although he was a Magician, the last link mentions some Mental effects that he did Does anybody know of any books that deal with building myths and legends particularly ones for Mentalism or Readings? Books, links or good effects? Cheers TJ |

Yep, the Mind and Magic of David Berglas. He was a master of publicity stunts and one-time insane impact effects - earing him the international man of mystery rep before Austin Powers
Also, picking up books on how to make things look impromptu (even if it does involve a ton of set-up) and presentation skills in general would all do this. Lastly, a classic source of real consideration of myth building is the SHEIL'S EFFECT and his follow up book the CANTRIP CODEX. Here he talks about the importance of building a character and how to gain publicity.... I'm sure there are more sources...

'Absolute Magic' by Derren Brown offers some good insight and points of view to building character and so on.

John Riggs, The Messiah Process.
The Man Who Shall Not Be Named also put out his version of the Sheils Effect and Messiah Process. But it does not appear to be available on his site (not that it or he can be referenced here anyway) |

Dr S
Nice breakdown of the topic and lots of good input As I was thinking about this I was thinking that seemingly impromptu and propless was the way to go. You mention "picking up books on how to make things look impromptu (even if it does involve a ton of set-up)". Do you know any book or DVD that deals with this aspect of Mentalism as the main topic? My links mention Jimmy Grippo leaving coins for the specs to take Dunninger's strong eye contact and cold hands Your item, Shiels Effect, has his poker bending effect The Berglas book is a bit expensive for me at present Any more with any more? :) TJ |

Going back to Jimmy Grippo.
Here is the link again: http://www.ring2100.org/jimmy.html Obviously he was a Legend, but HOW did he do it? He mixed mental effects and CARDS (so does Max, another legendary figure) and hypnosis. He did effects that he wasn't getting paid for Those are two rules that are laid down all the time here at the Café. No cards and always get paid for 'shows' Those are two rules that he broke He was a Maximus type figure (Another resource book for this thread by Al Mann) Does anybody know any more Jimmy stories? If anybody is looking for it (the original Alexander book), be sure to paste that full title in because Google and Amazon both favour the other book with a very similar title but different author) I have the big McGill book with the Dr. Q hypnosis act in it? Is this the one you mention above: "not the Dr. Q hypnosis act (different beast, different person)"? TJ |

Amazing. When I first started studying Mentalism, I searched for years and finally found a copy of the Dr. Q book and paid dearly for it. I had a real sense of having found a hidden treasure, and prized the book very much.
Now you just hit the Amazon button and all is revealed. - entity
