I don't know if this is the right place to post it but here are my thoughts on David Blaine. Overall he stinks compared to many other magicians I know. He uses the Two car monte way too often. He uses camera tricks for his levitation. He has no personality. Now what's entertaining about that? Blaine really is not a very good magician. He is changing what the world thinks when they think of the word magic, and not for the good. Now they think were are supposed to be creepy not entertaining and funny.
What are your thoughts on David Blaine? P.S. I will give him some props that he really does know how to get his magic known and out there for the world. |

Seriously lol, But anyways,David Blaine got me into magic after first seeing his special I was amazed. I wanted to do the amazing. It's got me a great reputation at school and magic is the best thing that ever happened to me and I thank David Blaine for that. He has personality, mysterious one at that. And if you see the rest of his special he likes to be that way. Mysterious, not all out and cocky like CA. Blaine is actually a great magician, don't judge a person off one show. You may not even know what a great magician is. Your talking about tricks I can bet you. He used two card monte what..3-4 times? and that's it. And he's *** good at it.
You may need to sit down and rethink yourself, what makes a great magician? If your thinking tricks like doing a trick way too often..your wrong If your thinking personality...everyone makes their own up, his was mysterious it's everyones at his own to make their own personality. Camera edits for the levitation, ok yeah that was balducci at work and they edited.. Still real peoples reactions and stories. Trust me, that's what they would really explain it when they saw it. I've seen a camera edit for the double lift, I say "so?" people still got the trick. small mistake at the most. I mean people still love him, people at school just TODAY where talking about how amazing David Blaine is and of course how amazing his restoration can trick was (healed and sealed) |

Sorry I did not mean to sound like I thought he stunk. What I was trying to say above is that he should not be as famous as he is. He is just an average magician. I know plenty of magicians that are better then him. But I guess what I said above kind of says why he is so known. He knows how to get it out there.

Different sells, I'll put it that way. I don't see an average magician starving himself 44 days to get to a point about pushing your body *cough* *hint* not average *hint.

TotalMagic, (I'll be as straight forward as you were) you just don't like him because you don't know what magic is about.
I am so thankful to David Blaine. He showed me magic is not about its tricks, but about its meaning. And that its meaning, and its performance, can be different, depending on the artist that presents it.
I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end...
I came here... To tell you how this is going to begin. |

Let me point out that if he had not used camera tricks on his first special for the levitation, then everybody in the world would be doing the Baladucci Levitation. By using a camera trick, he protected the method (To some extent).
Actually, Blaine is a master of card magic. Paul Harris commented that David could perform one of his hardest card tricks, and he is barely able to perform it himself! David inspired me to really start magic. He took magic to the people and he sells it to his spectators. His style and his acting ability should inspire all of us to work on our characters and the meaning of the magic and not the ticks so much. All of the tricks he did in Street Magic were "jive" (According to Penn). But it was his acting ability, character, and audience management that really sold the tricks. |

Actually David Blaine re-inforced a huge lesson in Magic for me...
I am forever thankful that he did his special where he shows a card trick to members of the tribe from the Amazon and they looked at him like "So what"? If your audience doesn't comprehend what you have done then they ain't thinking it's magical. Keep this in mind when performing for very young audiences.... Other than that, I wish him the best...

I REALLY LIKE David Blaine. I DO NOT like Stooges, Pre-Show Work, Camera Tricks, and Camera Editing. I REALLY HATE the fact he has used that in the past. While not a fan of "His Big Stunts" BUT his smaller sleight of hand KILLS. BTW. NOT (NOT) that I think I am him, or that I'm near as good as I am, but I'm been called "The David Blaine Of Portsmouth" (My Town) in a documentary about my Town after Dark "After Hours In Portsmouth" (I have a half an hour segment). Also without people seeing me, I've had to use 3 Magicians Blened into ONE Magician to convey my style. 1)David Blaine, 2)Bill Malone, 3)Michael Ammar, AGAINH, not that I'm ANYWHERE near tgere level.
1)Blaine - I have his basic intensity. I have what is know as "The Eye", you know what I mean, Max Mavek Has It too. 2)Malone - The nights when I'm on fire and just "Really On It" I can really throw those One-Liners out there, and I have some of the flirtatiousness (When I'm Single). 3)Ammar - I kinda have that "All Around Good Guy" type of style which is good for kids, families, and just for all situations. Anyway I think Blaine is 10 (TENTIMES) better than Criss Angel. All I know of Angel is what I've seen him do on T.V. He's probably a good stage illusionists but I don't even watch his T.V. show anymore. If I want to watch Actors or Camera Effects I'll just watch a good movie. Anyway I get a little insulted when I here David Blaine get insulted. As I said it the PEOPLE who watch my Magic that make that correlayion, Ed, (Eddini).

Blaine brought magic that was intimate and seemed impromptu into homes. Not new tricks but rather tricks not seen by many before those shows.
His role of the mysterious stranger was fitting for TV. Not much personality required in that role. I'm not a fan of his endurance stunts. Justin, Some time back I was talking with an old friend. She lives in a NJ town next to my home town. Apparently her son was a friend of Blaines. She said that they were practicing an effect that used fire and nearly set the house on fire. In my eyes there's no reason to insult Blaine. Like him or not, he brought a long hidden type of magic into homes and revived and interest in magic. |

Blaine really commercialized magic for the new millenium. Without him, I doubt we wouldn't have a quarter of the magicians around now. He is a big inspiration to many magicians including myself. Paul Harris holds David in VERY high regard and there is a reason why. His card work is swift and smooth, and his simplistic style of performing is surprisingly very intriguing.
I think bashing a magician because he's more famous than you are is very very low and that it is being done too much. Leave it alone, he is where he is because he's a good magician, let's leave it at that. Mitchell

Well he must have made SOME sort of impression to be being talked about.
He has been on TV quite a bit in the recent past, 10 years or so. I don't personally like his style, but I guess he did something right in the end.

I think it is impossible to deny David Blaine as a unique talent. He made an impression on the psyche of America that has not been matched by anyone. Maybe Derren Brown will get there, but I doubt it. His lack of a personality IS his personality. If he has no talent, I hate to think what that means about the rest of us.

I'm a Blaine fan, I couldn't care less what effects he did on his first show or whether I could do better, he was there and I wasn't, he did a good job and got people talking all the way across the pond to us brits and the general feeling was one of being very impressed. The people I met doing my performances were full of praise and thus mission completed..
He is a character, he doesn't have to crack jokes or have an extensive dialogue, in some ways he doesn't get in the way of the moment, he just lets it happen. Some magicians deminish the moment of astonishment by adding their little gag lines such as 'Cheers John, cheques in the post' or 'I did that without camera tricks' these are fun lines for some guys and a comedy magician like Bill Malone is fantastic but saying Blaine should be like that or have more lines or shouldn't stare at people is like saying all music should be like the Rolling Stones, variety is the spice of life.. Also is it always neccessary to have some story about why the cigarette goes through the coin? why not just shut up and do it, which is exactly what he did. Spelmann

I like David Blaine's Shows a lot. Before I'm into Magic and after in it, I'm still his fan.
Difference I find is that every end of his show, he does something and pushed his physical endurance to the Max. That is most inspirating and makes me see him as an Artist instead of every few magicians that comes along the way.(Didnt mean anyone, just a descripton that he's not just any other magicians.) His Magic, though can be purchase or quite common in some way, is so much different that it becomes what we called, Blaine's style; Blaine's Magic, Blaine's way etc. Anything that can be simple/common becomes special/unique whenever on his hands. I do not think he's weird or strange, but got a strong/nice character that seldom co-exist in the repertoire of a Close-up Performer. All in an act, and he is always playing through very well, a remarkable talented Artist I find if you were to ask me. Cheers, Ed |

I like what Marc Spelmann said. I also like the shaman of David Blaine. He showed many of us the road of magic or influenced Where in the show you see him showing a card to a mounted crow. Or where he is washing himself out of a bowl or even chanting from a black book. Quotes from Martin Luther king just adds to it all. I'd rather listen to Jimi Hendrix in a Blaine special then listen to Criss Angel screaming "I am a mindfreak! Mindfreak! mindfreak!" And you got to love the reactions. The reactions are just not the same as with CA. I hate the reaction, "He's the best mindfreak" or "He's is a mindfreak". But many people or now watching CA and realizes that his show is just like watching a special effect movie. Though Criss angel is really just screwing himself up with levitating because it's just umpractical to do when he is in the real world. And I bet people in the real world want to see him levitate. "Sorry everybody but if you want to see me levitate, go where I'm scheduled to perform."
everyone should try to catch "Room 401" on MTV. FInnaly some good magic with a taste of horror. I think some of the magicians are from "THEM". |
