Pro or Con...the Politicians do not have the answer that they tout. This needs to be hard fought in the Scientific circles. IF it's man made there are things that can be changed sure. If it is the Sun then there are things that can be prepared for that are a whole other can of worms. Real answers can be missed because of all the circus and crap going on by those with an agenda which has more to do with their personal power trips than something that will work. Fiddling around with carbon dioxide rather than steps to counter the Sun changes can be just as fatal if the other side is correct. We need to follow the money trail that will cause a Scientist to subscribe to an agenda rather than actual findings. But how to find a panel of Scientists that are not in the pocket of those we elected or obviously vice versa.
We do know what the Sun has done and will do and can do. Those studies need to be refined and digested and historical records and findings solidified. Those who wish to get hysterical over unfounded predictions can go ahead and do so. Hold the dance. Buy the ticket...but as long as there is this partisan plinking going on and one upsmanship, as to who's elected flunky and position is more valid it is a joke. I don't get out much and do what I can with what I have to not make much of an imprint. So personally it's a reality show to me. At this point I don't trust most of the performers and tend to look to the Sun for a warning.

Ok, correction noted... not the planet just all the humans trying to live on it.
I don't usually hear that distinction being made. Wow, I wonder if anyone would really care about the planets survival if we knew for certainty that conditions were soon to change that would prohibit any humans from existing on it, in say 50 or a hundred years? Doug, I agree with your above post, very well written. GlenD

All BS and wasted effort. The Comet will hit long before any silly little temp change and Roaches learn the moves.
BTW: The temp changed 10 degrees since I got up this morning.

Boy, it must be nice to be so sure about something that there is almost no true physical reason to believe for or against.
Lots of claims made by flawed people with flawed hypothesis (As the animal we are we cannot help but be flawed) and yet such fervor. Zealotry, I call it.

Josh, we can be pretty sure that it will get dark in about eight hours and that about ten hours later it will get light again. There are lots of things we are pretty confident about and with good reason.
As to the statements offered in that article... yes the author was blowing plenty of hot air IMHO but the theory used and the actual findings are still important in and of themselves. As to what we believe... underlying most of what we expect or know is a belief in a consistency in the universe, that the things we aren't watching at the moment will continue to exist and be around when we look again. Call it what you will but from that idea and some very good work done over thousands of years we have quite a bit of good working knowledge, theory that has proved usable, efficient and accurate and also lots data to work from. Flawed? Well we don't expect to be perfect. Accepting new things when they happen is part of the process. But as to calling the process of using theory to make predictions and then testing those predictions... that is not zealotry. That is about as open and humble a process as can be imagined to keep us from espousing useless notions.

The actions of the folk who read the findings and fight for them, regardless of any information to the contrary is the zealotry I dislike. There is more than one study on this subject, we should be wary of picking the one that we agree with and using it as "Proof". We don't have any proof, only hypothesis. These are based on what we see and believe. The sun does rise, but can we assume it will always do so? We can be fairly sure one day it won't. Although that is kind of a stretch in this discussion.

The real bottom line is that we keep pumping pollutants into the water, sea, and land, and we keep using up limited resources. We know that these are not good things. NOBODY thinks they're good things. And yet we keep doing it because it's easiest NOT to change, and a lot of people are making a lot of money with the current state of affairs.
So far we've seen a lot of minor extinctions, some commercial animals almost gone (whales, for one), local places polluted beyond recovery, local smog so bad you can't breathe, etc. But as it gets worse, who knows what could happen? We really don't know how these systems work. But one thing scientists know for sure is that in any balanced system, there are tipping points - points where after a long period of minor change, things take a sudden big change. We don't know where those are, and we don't know what the world will be like on the other side. So it would seem to me that a wise course would be to try to keep from going there until we at least understand what might happen.

I do agree that we do those things, and there is a tipping point. But also I believe we are doing a great deal to stem that behavior.
It's sad to say, but what we (seem to) want is to stop other nations efforts to become what we are, using our own methods. Either we give them alternative means to develop or we accept the fact that we are merely hypocritical. Even so we use much more than we need to. So who's going to be the first to start using only what they must to survive? Is magic necessary to our survival? On a tangent, I believe the damage to our oceans is the real threat that one day we will regret. I believe the global warming thing is in great part blown out of proportion.

Oceans definately #1 priority. There are so many REAL dangers (not just human caused either or Sun related) to Sea Life and balance, it should be frightening. But then our dumbass politicians haven't found a way to milk that yet to their personal advantage. Not talking shoreline pollution here...this is Deep Sea stuff.

Barring some unknowable natural catastrophe, IMO, war, nuclear, is the most immediate threat to the survival of our species.
