Hey guys. Not sure this is the right section, but I searched around and found a few website related posts in this forum.
Well, I want to create a website for my shows, but only have a very small bit of knowledge in HTML, and don't even know where to start. Does anyone know of someone who will make the website for me for a great price, etc.? Any help is great. -Vinnie |

There are several very skilled folks here on the Café the do this sort of thing. I'm sure they will respond shortly.
I used a local company in my town and they were fantastic. But my advice would be that if you are using a non-magic person, you should have a good idea of what you want your site to look like and not rely on them for the ideas. |

Thanks for the reply, Eric.
I hope that some of the other guys respond. I would also really like a magician to do it, because we have an idea of what we want. All the best, -Vinnie |

By posting how you want your website to be, the 'other guys' will have a better idea how to help you create one at a great price.

I haven't seen this much, but on my website I use very little HTML Vinnie. I know you are good with photoshop, etc...and this is what I mainly use.
I upload a jpeg file (the picture I want the site to look like). And then in the little html at the coordinates I want people to click on, as well as some search engine robot codes. Really easy, and I feel as if I have more freedom of changing it myself, and what it looks like. -john |

James, well, I don't quite know. I don't want any Flash or anything, just a basic site that has different pages for my contact info, a place for pics/videos, bio, show types, etc.
Thanks for chiming in, John! I took a look at your website, and see what you do. I guess I could do it on my own, but I don't know if theres a program you need to download, or anything about setting up a site. I am good with Photoshop, so I can do my own stuff like pictures, etc, but I need to know how to get the website hooked up and how to put the stuff on it, etc. Any help? Thanks! -Vinnie |

Vinnie,
If you are up for a challenge, spend an afternoon this weekend at a Barne's and Noble's and read a book on HTML and CSS. That will give you an idea of whether you want to expend the energy to learn to do it yourself or have someone else do it. I will say it is very rewarding and also gives you the freedom to update your site on a whim if you learn HTML and CSS. Plus, as far as programs, all you'll need is a text editor like Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac) and an FTP program. There are others on this forum who are very talented and if you want someone else to do your site, they will more than likely do a great job. Also, while I do not build websites for others (I'm busy enough with my own!) I recently started a free podcast that covers not only website design, but using all aspects of tech to promote yourself. Good luck Vinnie! Scott P.S. John, please don't take this as an insult. It is not. I would urge you to change your site to a HTML/CSS site. Several reasons: 1. The search engines cannot read one word on your site, which is much more efficient than using metatags, like you've got. 2. I cannot resize the text on your site. 3. It takes much longer to load since it is pure image files. |

Hey Scott. Thanks for your words! (By the way, I love the podcast!)
Well, how much would you say the BEST price I could get to do my site for me would be? Thanks -Vinnie |

ScottRSullivan Special user 874 Posts |
Honestly, I think the best price would be around $30 for a book. I'm not being smart or anything. I really think you could pick it up. As for what is a price for web design, I have no clue. I haven't been in that market for years. Since running my own production studio and performing full time, I haven't had much time for web design.
So I don't have a clue what the going rate is these days. Someone else is SURE to chime in, though, who does do this sort of thing. By the way, I didn't say it before, but wanted to. You have a nice site. Well designed. I didn't mean change the layout. I just meant have it changed to CSS. That way Google and other search engines can find the text. Scott P.S. Thanks for the comments on the podcasts. |

Ack. I'm operating on no sleep. Let me try one more time.
The nice layout comment by me was for John's site. John: sorry for the confusion! I like the design, just think you should change to CSS. Though, Vinnie, I still hope someone points you in a good direction for designing your site if you decide not to do it yourself! Scott |

All I will add here is listen to every word that Scott is saying here. The man knows his stuff and has been doing this and video production for such a long time. He is a true professional in every meaning of the word and has helped me countless numbers of times on information and sharing of it. He will help and assist anyone who wants to help themselves. If anyone is even remotely intersted in video production, promo videos or the technological side of the magic business, you can be sure Scott knows what he is talking about and can help you. He also has a wealth of great information at his website that just can not be beat. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks Scott for really showing what the Café is all about.. you really are a magician helping other magicians.

Sounds like what you want is something simple, something to show an interested client that makes it easier for them to book you. I simply use freewebs, paid to get rid of the advertising ($15/year), and got my own domain name ($9/year).
Looks nice and clean, as well as professional. Check it out at http://www.simmonsmagic.com and let me know what ya think! Best, Steve |

No problem scott,
I am already in the process of doing learning full HTML...I have run the site like this for a little under a year and have definitly realized those problems. The search engines can only pick up the html code that I only inputed on the home page, which could definitly lead to low hits off of google searches, and I have thought about this a lot. I try and make it as user friendly as possible but I do NOT like my new design but I am keeping it until I get this new one made with HTML up. This past week I came up with that design but personally I do not like the way it turned out, so you may have caught it in the middle of construction. lol At the point in creating the website, that is the only way I knew how to, while at the same time I was learning basic HTML. Thanks for the input, no harm taken, constructive critizism always helps. Give it another month and I will get the HTML and Flash down. Then I will just get a layoutm and copy and paste the text from my files. BTW....I was reading in an HTML article..."How do you spell HTML?" lol -john |

Vinnie, I could do it for you if you really wanted. Have a look at my site http://www.ben-lewis.co.uk
That site would cost in the region of approx $580. But as said before it is always best to design your own, as a magician. |

BTW, that price was without the picture and video gallery, with them the price is $1838 approx.

John, that sounds great! I'm glad you are making some progress. In the most recent Bits and Buzz podcast (i just published it last night) I went into a little detail about CSS.
I talked a bit about what it can do and how to do it. Also, I went into several reasons why. By the way, the search engine bots can follow image map links, but they just can't read any of the text in the jpgs. That's the big problem. I completely understand the "works in progress." Been there myself MANY times!!! I'm very excited about the direction you are going and I can't wait to see what you come up with! Scott |
