Put it in the Inner Thought's section, but don't make it Uri specific, just about every performer that has made a mistake will have to be mentioned or it would not be fair and balanced.

But Geller always said that he's not a magician, so I don't see what the problem is.

Didn't you watch the video? DJM provided the link. It's open to the whole world! Arnon P.S. Is "Uri specific" a lab test? |

Yes, I watched it several times; DJM has a hotlink to it and has posted that same link many, many times.
There were other videos with the local magicians discussing how Uri does all of his feats on television as well. It is a nation of (un)Masked Magicians exposing our methods to build a names by bringing Uri Geller down. Pitiful! Tony |

Question to DJM:
Have you ever performed on televison? BTW: Why didn't you post the link to the follow up demonstration by Uri? |

That magician on the clip should be thanking Uri for the only chance he could get to have some TV coverage.

Salsa, that magician is pretty well known over here and doing very well even without exposing Uri.

From what I understand, it was built into a bigger performance, with an even larger audience watching, and there was no TT employed.
In fact, there was much talk around the incident that the whole thing may have been a publicity stunt (gambit) to garner a large audience through the controversy and the follow up as an almost challenge situation. But this who subtopic is off topic. |

Tony, the second performance was the same as the first one, only he was hidding the ** somewhere else.. The problem is that anyone watching that could guess without a problem where exactly it was.

The best way to thank Geller- who has done so much more for mentalism than most of you care to admit- is to perform your mentalism in the best and most REALISTIC manner possible. The great reactions some of you get with metal bending are only because of years of Geller's genius and innovation. Metal Bending is accepted as being real by many people which is which people react so strongly to it and of course that is because of his Majesty Geller.
Geller learned a long time ago how ungrateful, spiteful and jealous many magicians can be....its long due that we as mentalists show him some thanks. Many a popular mentalist have made careers by exposing Geller's methods and not mentioning - or worse feeling morally superior to him while they steal his material. Lucky for him he doesn't care what we think- he is above us and should be! He has an understanding and respect for mentalism and magic that is much deeper than most of us will ever know.
It is hard to believe a man is telling you the truth if you know that if you were in his situation you would be lying.

The funny thing I see in this whole issue is that if a bunch of magicians were to thank Uri Gellar in public, it would not be good for his image. Imagine a bunch of guys who are entertainers who never claim to have any paranormal abilities, but just do "tricks" publicly thanking Uri. What message would this send? Hey, Uri, Thanks for making an effect popular for us. Or, are you, as mentalists, working more in the world of fraud we are all pointing fingers at Uri for existing in. Where is the line drawn?
For me if Uri had only performed for stage shows and the like and never taken his abilities to science he would not exactly be crossing the line. If it was only to create mystery and entertainment, sure no problem. When any of you perform metal bending of any kind, do you say "hey this is just a trick for your entertainment" before or after your show? Or do you just let the question stand for your audience. Do you make vague statements about it being questionable? At what point are you being detrimental to your show by disclaiming your ability? And, how vague can you make it and still feel that you have not compramised your own ethics? Based on what I have read on this thread, my real wonder is where the effect of spoon bending, or metal bending, or ratcheting of an object originated. I have heard that these effects have existed long before Uri. I have heard that even bending a wine glass was an old Gypsy trick. I have heard that bending silverware was as well. How about the haunted key? So, if we are thanking Uri, then why? If it was not for Uri going about things as he has, and mind you I was born in 79, so I missed the Uri fiasco, then James Randi would not have had reason to go after a mentalist, and would have kept his exposure to peter popof and the likes of John Edwards. Uri has had both good and bad effects on the world of performing as a mentalist. I think the main problem is that he does not know what he wants to communicate. This is the biggest problem for our art form. What is the message you send by performing things that seem real, but nobody else can do?

I think the problem lies with the fact it was never about spoon bending. It was about creating the controversy and interest that Uri did. He was a phenomenon an Icon of the 70s and will be remembered for a long time to come. And all he did was bend spoons? Well not exactly Uri was a master of audience and media manipulation.
And I don't think anyone has come close to this ever since. I don't understand why magicians believe they are moral cops and have a mission to bash him.. Ok you don't want to thank him. But his impact or impression on the world is undeniable. And those that point out the negatives are missing the bigger picture. |
