I have little doubt that Jim is very sincere in his regard for Uri Geller,
and that he was deeply affected by his appearance on the world stage thirty plus years ago. I haven’t thanked Uri Geller, (as if he would care anyway). At times I feel that, even as gifted a showman as Uri Geller is, both he and those attempting to expose him, have done more to polarize the magic community than to heal whatever wounds were inflicted years ago. Not exactly high water marks of human behavior. I can’t be thankful for that. Steve |

You are unique in Jim/Jack's cadre in that you exercise your independent judgment. On the other hand, most of Jim/Jack's minions (e,g, chichi711) seem to act like his personal zombies - the living dead - or as stated in Jim/Jack's signature, Satan's devils dancing like fine gentlemen across the stage of reality. No, I don't think HollyMental needs to apologize to anyone. Anyone on this forum, for any period of time, knows of Jim/Jack's "clique." However, you don't rate the generalization, so kudos to you! Sincerely, Arnon |

I think it is a bit much to post such a thing. Heck you posted positive things about some of my offerings also. Are you the living dead part of my "clique" Just because some of these guys agree with me on this topic does not make them any different than you. Look up the Final Leap of Faith thread and the one that came before that. ChiChi and Danny Doyle and many others were attacking me. We agree and dissagree as freinds do. Sincerely, Jim

I give credit where it is due - and I supported you when you were being unjustly attacked in this thread as imposing your views on others (although you did try to manipulate us with your "should" statement). But chichi711 does not listen, and goes on and on like an automaton. Look: Quote:

Why do the majority of all these threads end up with people saying things way out of line that have emotionally laden hurtful comments? If people didn't agree with JJ, so just say so, and move on... or start a discussion. I've been invited to various other sites where I've gotten to engage in some really great discussions on controversial topics in the field where everyone treated each other with respect.
I also like JJ's work (most of the time!) and I actually found the Infinity E. a nice diversion and effect. I suppose since I have posted I liked it and some other things of his (weirdly, I do that for almost anyone on the Café whose work I actually do like and appreciate)... I might be seen as part of his "minions" - so this post will fall on dead ears. Note to yourselves - reflect on what it means to pigeonhole, compartamentalize, and reduce and what potential friendships and collaberators can be lost. People seem to forget what they say (or type) speaks volumes of who they are versus who they think they are. Personally, wouldn't it be nice to see if you are hurling insults before hitting POST? Oh, I also agree Uri didn't invent the EFFECT, but he did create a nice "modern" presention via character and premise for powers... in the 1970s, consistent with what was "hot" in N. America... see the SHEILS effect. My metal bending owes more to Tarbell ... but I am sure between my collecting Banachek, Osterlind, Stebbler, essays of Patrick Redford, some tips from Marc Spelmann etc.... each who innovates the effect and adds to the continuing growth of this effect... I owe a debt. Uri wasn't my inspiration to do metal bending... especially since I never used his premises. However, as a historic figure in the field, I am sure his presence had some ripples on people's creative juices - although that is just a feeling and not proof. Well, good night all.

Dr. Spektor:
Perhaps there is a certain animosity towards someone who wants to thank a fraud. Especially when that certain someone, namely Jim/Jack, has wild "paranormal" claims that he "Has made a deal with a man yet to be born" on his introduction to his website. Sounds a bit like what Uri would do today, eh? Arnon Jim/Jack: If chichi711 has "superior knowledge," that proves how close he is to you. Do you feed him spiders? |

I don't know about Jim, but it is common knowledge that Uri got his abilities from aliens. Or at least the encounter with the UFOs during his childhood awakened this ability. And before anyone asks, yes! I do believe in life on other planets and in extraterrestrial craft. Tony |

Wow Arnon way to drag me into this. Go back and read the threads as Jim suggested. You will see just how much we disagreed. Like Jim said Friends can disagree. You don’t see it that way I guess? It should be no surprise to me. It doesn’t seem like you ever do your homework before you just toss accusations out there. Why do you think I proudly display the "arguementalist" below my name? It came as a result of arguing with Jim. Ironic?
To say that "chichi711 does not listen, and goes on and on like an automaton" Is a low blow and suggests that whatever Jim says I do. That is simply not the case. I have my own mind and my own ideas. I respect what Jim has to say and have often taken his advice and I have often listened and done something else. Beleive it or not, but you can learn from other people. |

They do have a special amount of fiber I hear. It could be false, but I am sticking with that until someone proves that theory wrong. That fiber is used in a special way that unleashes the power of telepathy in me. It is a very sureal feeling. I should stop I have said to much.

The origins of spoon-bending have been discussed at length in this and other forums but much of it seems to have gone unheeded and misconceptions still abound. To date the claims of prior art consist of:
1) The "wobbly pencil" illusion - This bares little relation to anything Geller does in either effect or method and is unlikely to be an inspiration. 2) The gag effect of pretending to bend a spoon then showing it as straight - different effect, different method. 3) The bending cocktail/swazzle stick effect from the Jinx - This is a legitimate precursor of Geller's nail-bending effect but not the spoon-bending or breaking, especially as Geller was seemingly bending spoons before he went on to nails. 4) Milbourne Christopher's assestion that some "strong-man" stunts of yesteryear involved secretly using acid to weaken metal bars in order to bend them more easily in public using their physical strength. Christopher believed (wrongly) that Geller weakend spoons with chemicals, hence this rather far fetched idea. One that not even randi endorses. 5) An story of incidental damage caused during a poltergeist incident, about which Geller was unaware until fairly recently and thus couldn't have inspired him. 6) An as yet untranslated Chinese text - again, untenable as an inspiration for Uri nearly forty years ago. 7) T. A. Waters's claim that spoon-bending originated in an effect published in Abra - This claim was subsequently picked up by Randi and is dealt with below. 8) Randi's late in the day claim about an identical effect published in an unnamed conjuring magazine in 1968 - Fully debunked (I believe) at: http://www.zem.demon.co.uk/sa2z.htm (Note that in private correspondence Randi conceeded that the effects were not the same and that he would make some changes to the wording to reflect this. That was a year ago this month and no changes have been made). Also note that neither of Randi's major books dealing with Geller made any mention of this claim or any other prior art regarding spoon-bending. 9) A brief statement by Berglas (also late in the day) on his TV series the jist of which is repeated in Britland's book; to wit: "David had performed metal bending effects and watch stopping routines before Geller appeared on the scene, notably during the sixties on his tour of Israel." - Personally I'm dubious about this for a couple of reasons: Randi was unaware of Berglas's claim when I emailed him yet the two of them discussed and corresponded about Uri extensively in the seventies; Randi doesn't often miss an opportunity to take credit away from Geller yet there's nothing about this in any of his writings on the subject over a thity year period (nor anywhere in the conjuring press). Berglas's own silence for so long and the lack of details given in Britland's huge and detailed book for magicians makes me suspicious that whatever he was doing with metal pre-Geller bares little realation to what Uri does. Since the book came out I've twice emailed Berglas to politely ask for a brief description of the effect, and also asked a close friend of his to enquire for me. Silence has been the answer. Only recently a fairly well known Israeli mentalist contacted me. He was all fired up at the prospect of exposing the unoriginality of Geller's spoon-bending and was looking for sources. After explaining that I knew of none I suggested he contact Berglas and Randi for more details of their respective claims etc. and asked to be kept informed about what evidence he found. Six months later and no response. Finally (I promise) there's the fact that Geller's metal-bending didn't start with cutlery at all but with the bending and breaking of objects like finger rings, pins, bracelets and small chains. Which is the more likely forerunner of his cutlery effects - his own earlier work or any of those claimed above? |
