Not exactly a betcha, but it was either here or the maths forum, and here seemed to be more in the spirit of things.

Does anyone know any good resources on scams involving the giving and receiving of change following a transaction? The wait-I'll-give-you-two-tens-and-you-give-me-a-five-and-a-one-and-we're-square type of exchange, where one party ends up thinking they're even but are actually down.

Cheers.

Since posting this last night I've discovered the term for this type of swindle is "change-raising" and have found plenty of information available about it online.

I was going to bring that up but didn't want to confuse things. Short changing came from the days when the guy selling tickets and a carnival worked behind a tall pedistal. When you pay the ticket guy would put your change on the table top and because of the height you would reach up to get it after he counted it out in front of you. Problem is he would keep some of the change held back with the idea being you wouldn't grab it. If you realized it and kicked up a fuss he would say 'yeah mate, you didn't take your change, be more careful next time', if you didn't come back it stayed in his pocket.

Hej,

get paul zenons tape..he does a graet routine with two bartenders. he takes a bill from one bartender, signs it, then slips it to an accomplice. the accomplice then cahnges that bill with the second bartender, who puts the signed bill into cash register number two.

acc gets the value of the bill back in change, then magician tells barkeep ¤1 the signed bill is in the other register. if you don't give the money back you have broken the law, but its a fun routine.

regards,

geoff diamond.

Check out the Encyclopedia of Scams. I give the full explanation of change rising and some other change variations.

I did these on national television a few months back for a current affairs program.

When I trained retailers about this, I had a couple of videos that showed the routine and a step by step instruction. It can be real confusing to the retailer. I highly recommend Tuckers book "The Change Raisers". You will find some good info in there to help you with this.
