It's not death I'm afraid of; it's life

Quick thought:
A flip-top TT (from the D-lite guy - whatshisname) would take care of ash & soil. A Sprizzer or bulb from 'Squirting finger ring' could deal with water. But it's a razor's edge from farce if you squirt your volunteer in the face

ROFL - I just came up with another method, but it's so inapropos it could get me booted off here.
It would involve being pantless and standing over the "victim" ..lol (the only prop necessary being a lighter should they pick "fire", and eating beans prior - you can imagine my solutions for the other two choices) Yeah, I need help ..

Or what if you used a more "sensory active" approach? Maybe for fire, they start to smell smoke, for water you have a fine mist spray and make them feel damp and for burried alive, maybe like a moldy kind of smell? Or maybe it could be more like a sympethetic effect. If they pick fire, smoke starts to pour from your clothing, water, maybe you mysteriously start to drip water, and for burried alive, you could produce dirt......

Sand in TT
water in a pull combined with the black widow lighter in your hand the widow can steal, give you the water & fire... |

The black widow is a nice tool, but a tad expensive, and sort of proprietary, in the sense that while everyone has a TT, few own the BW. (I'd love to, by the way)
It's a workable idea though - and better than my last one.

Lots of interesting methods! I still think there is something simpler. We can probably rule out at least one of the options, say drowning, especially if we word the other options in a sufficiently horrible way. You don’t say dying in a fire, as some people will know that most victims pass out first. You make sure to say something that rules this out, something that makes them think about the heat and pain and fear.
Matthew St. Cyr suggestions are also full of possibilities: Quote:

In the process of performing the banishing ritual (which will protect them from their feared way of dying) they feel heat, moisture or a pressure on the chest (or find sand in their pocket), whichever is the most apt. |

David, this still needs to be expanded for the other possiblites, such as falling, or dying in a plane crash, which is a very real fear for some people, especially those with a fear of heights. I admit I have no idea how to represent that fear, though.
I think my greatest fear was represented as "after death" in a "Tales from the Crypt" episode I saw, I forget which one, but in the story, your brain is still active after "death", and you can still hear, see (if your eyelids are open), and most disturbingly, feel. Imagine the horror that is your own autopsy as they cut, saw, and grind away! Best death possible in that scenario? Getting blown to smithereens!

An idea for falling which would double for being buried alive would to say something like
"your falling, falling faster and faster until....BAAM You hit the ground" You would just use soil like being buried alive. I like the "sensory active" and the banishing ritual ideas |
