In order to build an illusion you have
to understand the concept of building them. Its more complicated than you think.

I agree with Marshall. Small overlooked details can give you a major headache.

I am totally agree with Marshall ( Mai-Ling ), if you are building something from the plan. The dimension and idea might not work for you. Due to the dimension is base on the builder's perception.
There are lots of things that you might not foresee. Changes are required to make due to your size, weight and other factors. Trial and error will be definately happens. As from my experience, all plans are just a guide to builders who are experience who can get a feel how big and what to do. Lets take this for example... In order to get value '6', we can achieve from doing the following.. 1) 1 + 5 = 6 2) 4 + 2 = 6 3) 3 + 3 = 6 4) 10 - 4 = 6 and so on.... This means that from the diagrams/plan it doesn't means that's the only way to fabricate the illusion. There are lots of other ways to fabricate. Good into deep thinking, lots of drawing and intensive research on hardware. This will save lots of time and slove most of your problems while you are building. Regards Aaron Chee.

Andre Mayne has a few books with large illusions, my personal favourite stage illusion is Crawling Through a CD.

Thanks James & Aaron.
I grew up while illusions were being built just for me. I understand the difficulty in the basic building. The plans are generic. You have to go beyond the plans. The really great craftsman that builds amazing illusions are the ones that DON'T use plans at all. They know exactly what they want to build and how they plan to build it. If they come across a problem, they think it through and work it out on paper until they solve it. That's why the book I'm working is based on one such example and one person alone.

I find it amusing how the topic's changed although the question was:
"Where is the best place on the web to find big stage illusion blue prints?" Not. Do I need to be skilled, or have knowledge of building / building stage illusions. Although the points are very valid - the points are totally correct. But why is it. When someone asks a simple question. We tend to jump into how knowledgeable we are about our field or our industry - and answer something totally different and not really to the original question . .. My second question: Why is there an off topic button on the report post. When. Even the board moderators ignore this fact on many topics. Could we just. REMOVE that from the report post option? Might be easier. have a nice day. |

Thank you, Ryan! We needed that!
To piggyback on what someone said earlier - yes - I would definitely recommend Andrew Mayne's work in his IllusionBook and Solo-X (although he has a good amount of other illusion books out there). that's a great start to get your creative mind turning. Also, as someone said earlier, these books for the most part don't give you direct plans and measurements but guidelines so that you can build a cardboard/foamcore mock-up and see how it fits you. This is something Andrew stresses from the very beginning before you start any tablesaw. The methodology is seeded in "tried and true" but also gives illusions fresh twists as well. You really can't go wrong.
Things are about to change........ LIGHTS!!!

I doubt you will find free blueprints over the web.
Check out past Gennii magazines as well as recent Magic Magazines they have plans in them.
