Hi gang,

I thought I would post a simple card trick I've had a lot of fun with. It's basically "window dressing" for a double lift, but it gets a GREAT reaction, as the ending comes as a complete surprise. Give it a try, you might like it...

Chad

"22"

A card is selected and returned to the deck. The magician says he’s worked out a mathematical formula to find the chosen card and proceeds to go through a series of cuts and shuffles, mumbling to himself the whole time. To finish, he says all he has to do is cut 21 cards from the bottom of the deck to the top, which he does. “That’s the formula, your card is now on top!” The top card is flipped face-up. “The five of hearts.” The card is placed on the table face-down, but the spectator says it isn’t his, and that it was, in fact, the eight of clubs. Thinking to himself, the magician says, “Oh, wait a minute, it was supposed to be 22 cards, not 21.” Saying this, he slowly takes one more card from the the bottom of the deck and moves it to the top. Pointing to the card on the table he says, “OK, that should do it - now check.” The spectator flips over the card and it’s the eight of clubs.

Set-up: None

Method: Have a card selected and control it to the top. Let’s say it’s the eight of clubs. Give the cards a couple false cuts, and then jog-shuffle the selection to the middle of the deck. As I do this, I say, "Okay, let's see, I cut the deck once, twice, three times, and then shuffle 36 cards like this..." The selected card should now be in the middle of the deck with an in-jogged card above it, and the deck should be in dealing grip in your left hand.

Say that to finish the formula, all you have to do is cut 21 cards from the bottom of the deck to the top. Take the deck in Biddle grip in your right hand, getting a break above the selection with your right thumb in the process. This is done by pushing up on the in-jogged card with the right thumb as it gets squared into the deck. Now, double undercut all the cards below the thumb break to the top. This is done by first cutting the bottom half of the cards below the thumb break to the top, and then cutting the rest of them to the top to finish. As I do this I say, "That's 12 and...21 cards to the top." This brings the selection to the top.

Execute a double lift, displaying the wrong card, and then turn it facedown. Thumb the top card (the eight of clubs) to the table. Of course, the spectator will tell you the card is not his. Tell him you made a mistake, and that you were supposed to cut 22 cards to the top, not 21. Say, "I can fix it though." As this line is delivered, very slowly take one card from the bottom of the deck and place it on top. Point to the card on the table and ask them to check it now. When they flip it over, they’ll be shocked to see that it's now their selection.

Stuff: What’s so fun about this trick is the odd timing of the change. When I mention the mistake and then correct it by moving one more card to the top, it really throws off the spectators’ thinking. I’ve actually given them a plausible reason as to why the trick didn’t work and they’re closely watching the deck to see how I’ll get out of this mess. They totally forget about the card on the table, so they’re even more surprised when it changes.

It is such a great trick!!! So off-beat in timing and revelation.

Thank you so much Chad!
