Can someone tell why he is a great mentalist/subluminalist in his lifeshows and on his televisionshow a miraclemaker whit some (high end) mentalism?
Best wishes, John |

Didn't you see his stage shows? He's also a miraclemaker there. He can make the entire audience think of a number and the name of a newspaper using subliminal messages! What can be more amazing than that.

His 2 videos were pure gold.
His stage shows are brilliant. His TV works runs from the sublime to the preposterous (in plot). Wait until you see the plot where he smuggles a hypnotized man through airport security and leaves him in Turkey. To get away with some of the stunts he pulls the mugs would have to sign a legal waiver beforehand and this can't be done. You can't sign away the rights to sue people. TJ |

Exactly, teejay. To say that he doesn't use actors/stooges is ridiculous when some of the things he does would get him sued for everything he had. Like the kid at the arcade who supposedly got hypnotised from the game and was led to somewhere else and scared spitless. No way a TV network would put themselves in that situation!

The development of Derren Brown's character, presentation and subsequent reputation is a carefully controlled, and now well thought out progression from "magician" to a fully charactered mentalist/skeptic persona revealing the foibles of credulity without revealing the "tricks." It is admirable and entertaining.
The technical side of what he does -- I have not a clue other than to say that it is a well edited and dramatically enhanced set of shows that intergrate music, lighting, set, personality, timing and dramatic effect in the writing and editing. I have not seen any of the work life -- and wonder if any live venue can deliver the punch and punctuation evicent in the TV work. It is also important to note that while Derren's live shows tend to be sold out well in advance -- this is in areas where his TV shows have been aired. Whether his publicity/PR machine would fill houses where his name is not a household tellie word is open to proof.

The person at the arcade was NOT an actor/stooge. Derren even explained on The Heist extactly how he does these things witout using one, so maybe try to watch it.

I would like to watch Heist. Nothing you sign will keep you from being able to sue and most likely win a case like that. You can't just have someone sign away that whatever happens they won't sue. It just doesn't hold up in court. If it did, TV shows could just do anything. Even with those contracts they still have to be overboard conservative because all they do is hopefully scare them into thinking they can't sue.
Anything you'd sign would have to be before the effect anyway which means they would have had contact with the person before the effect and would have to know exactly what's going to happen. Don't you think that kind of goes against what the perception on TV is? You can't put someone through that just hoping they'd sign away a chance to make a ton of money on a suit AFTERwards!!! The process of filming is very interesting and very unique. It provides many opporutnities for deceptionand preshow work in a way that the people on screen wouldn't question it or feel they were "duped" by not showing everything. I actually considered writing a booklet on these things, as I had studied the possibilities and used them in my mentalism documentaries. But, I wanted to keep them to myself, lol! |

Jonathan, I highly recommend you to watch The Heist and that should explain how he does these kind of effects without actually using stooges, and why no one would need to sue Derren after the show.. In other words, it shows the Pre-Show process that you mentioned in your post.
Derren even admits in the beginning of The Heist that hypnosis like this isn't real and the whole point is making people do things without actually telling them to do so. That's how they do the arcade effect and anything else that looks like hypnosis. Notice that Derren doesn't mention hypnosis in the disclaimer, and there's a reason for that. |

Jonathan:
Anyone can TRY to sue for anything at all. That doesn't mean they will stand a chance of winning. If someone signs a legal release indemnifying the show and/or the Performer from liability for damages resulting from the participant's part in the performance, the person is on very shaky ground if they later try to sue. Anyone involved in television on a professional level would know that. If you'd watch the DB programs and pay attention to what is actually being said, you'd understand that the subjects of the various segments have often agreed to take part in the show before hand. That doesn't make them stooges in any way, nor does it mean that they will know the exact nature of the segment in which they'll take part. I'm sure that Derren, his Producers and the Production's lawyers are not fools. I'm equally certain their releases are airtight. It's simply the way things are done on television. You have to get people's permission to film them and then broadcast their image on television. If there's any possibility of the participant being damaged or injured during the performance, they are informed of that, and they are asked to sign a liability waiver. No one is forced to participate without their consent. All who consent sign a waiver stating as much. On a personal note, I'm pleased that you've decided to keep your insights on pre-show work and television to yourself. Good decision. I'll continue to search for additional signs of wisdom in your posts. - entity

If anybody hasn't read the lengthy interview with Derren on Jamy Ian Swiss's site, I'd recommend it. Aside from Jamy maybe asking some excessively leading questions it's very good.

Although it is a good TV production, it did not fully capture the power of the live show. For instance, when DB stopped his pulse by suffocating himself, the entire audience of 1800 people seemed to hold their collective breath for 30 seconds. There was not a sound to be heard throughout the theater. That is the power of a great performer. When the show was over, people did not give one of those pro forma standing ovations we see so often these days. They leaped to their feet. So many comments on this board about DB seem to be of the "C'mon, he can't be that good" variety. Actually, he is. Bob |

Even worse that is the fact that some claim to actually KNOW HOW when, in reaity, they're way out. Just as an example someone was talking about the excellent NLP being used. C'mon guys (it's a puppet!), this is 'penny for your thoughts'!!! DB can't even spell N-L-P. Luckily, of course, he doesn't need to. For what it's worth I also claim to be a senior NLP practitioner, and I can't spell it either. Bobser.

This thought came to me:
I'm so glad that Frank Sinatra is not still alive in the internet era. Can't you see shower singers and semi-pros on "The Music Café" carping, "What makes him so special? Why is he so rich and famous? After all, I sing the same songs he does! If I had the money to pay for those Nelson Riddle arrangements and hire that band, I'd be just as popular." Not that Frank would care. |

Salsa, I think you are right. I always found that monkey Derren throws to the audience pretty suspicious.
