Last night marked probably the last chance I had of regularly performing the vanishing cigarette, or the cigarette in the jacket - indoors at least.
As of today, smoking in bars, restaurants and so on is banned in England. So last night I showed the trick as often as I could. It was that effect (cig in jacket) that turned me on to close-up magic and its power, 25 years ago. I even took up smoking again for the evening so I could perform it more often! It'll be drinking next, mark my words...! |

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Condolences on your loss. I did that trick for years before I quit smoking. I missed the trick (and several other cigarette tricks that were part of my repertoire) more than I missed smoking. That all happened before indoor smoking bans became a law.
Food for thought... I doubt anytime soon it is going to become illegal to light a match. Vanishing a lit match might be a close second... understanding that most people probably believe it is easier to extinguish a match, than a cigarette. Reproducing a lit match is also much easier, although that shatters the disturbing aspect that makes it a lingering effect, and such a good trick. ~michael

Have you tried using stage ciggarettes?
I'm not sure about england's new law, but in Toronto, it says that you can't smoke tobacco (marijuana is illegal, so that's already covered) I know of at least one resteraunt magician in toronto who uses herbal cigarettes filled with sage and lavender, so that they burn the same way, are the same size, and smell really good. |

I am also wondering because of the ban on cigarette smoking, would fake cigarettes be usable.
Does the cigarette ban indicates only tobacco? If that is the case then the herbal cigs may be the way out. |

The ban does not include smoking as part of an act !!
The wording is vague and would need to be checked, but at first sight it looks like we are still okay. The people who can't smoke may find it amusing but the anti-smokers will cause trouble. |

It means that some of the effects that I did with a borrowed cigarette are gone - but it also means that I will not be breathing in noxious smoke when I am trying to work and will not be coming home reeking of other peoples cigarette fumes.

Nicoteen patch in jacket just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Cigarette smoke stinks and disturbs people, Herbal cigarettes smell worse and bother people more. Do everyone a favour and don't ignite anything that can be smoked and that would include if there is a law against it or not.

Hi Ross
If you get the info from the office of the deputy prime minister, you will see that there is an exemption for stage performances where a lit cigarette is integral to the show. So, good news, you can continue to do your cig magic. |

Does the same apply to strolling magic in restaurant/club conditions? Private parties held in indoor public venues?

Where the artistic integrity of a performance makes it appropriate for a person who is taking part in that performance to smoke, the part of the premises in which that person performs is not smoke-free in relation to that person during his performance. That is the exemption as it stands in the current legislation - it's not specified where that non-sfokefree area is, so I guess it could be where you are strolling through a bar or restaurant. However, I would be circumspect about doing ciggy routines in restaurants in particular as you do not want to upset your audience. It seems clear, though that it is perfectly OK for a stage performer to light up if it is part of his/her routine. |

I used a wooden cigarette once, this was in California and note I said a wooden cig, and I was reported for violating the non smoking rule. Not only that but the complainers, there were two, said the smoke irritated their throats and eyes and since it was at their place of employement it was also making a hostile work place. I was approached about this by the HR manager, who was very upset and ALSO claimed to smell the smoke. I showed her the cig, told her that I didn't smoke and that anyone complaining (including her) was either a bold face liar or had problems beyond my ability to help. It really ticked me off that they had an official write up done and were going to send it to the freakin city.
Only a raging idiot would go into a restaurant that is non smoking and try to use a lit cigarette and claim it is artistic license. Use phonies or those little pencils and make it a golf related presentation. |

Hey, Magic Santa. The Nicorette Nazis are everywhere, but I'm quoting the UK legislation here. I think you're right about a restaurant setting, but if the law allows it I don't see any problem doing it on stage, or even in a pub/bar if the management is OK with it.
The anti-smoking lobby here are only UK nuts, not California nut. |

The legislation in England includes herbal cigarettes. I think that although it may be legal to use a cigarette in a performance and you would get away with it on stage; if you tried it in a close up setting, the reality would be people informing you that smoking indoors is illegal and possibly calling the management. This would interfere with the integrity of the show more than not smoking.

Having said that, it could be interesting to apply for funding from the Arts Council for a piece of street theatre entitled "The soon to be extinct social smoker."

I quit smoking about ll years ago. I was in California, talk about a place anti smoking. First I had to smoke outside, so I did, then 15 feet from the building, so I did, then, and this was good, off the property...but I couldn't leave the property during work hours! From what I hear smoking is now banned in parks outdoors and they want it banned in cars.
