In another forum the question was asked: "Any ideas on patter for the Color Changing Knives?" I am using that question to offer the following......
In developing patter for anything you have to look at the 'routine' itself and the 'elements' that make up the routine. Ask yourself....what could a knife that changes color 'STAND' for by way of metaphor or simile? Next, ask the question, "WHY?" would I want a knife to change color? Using the above, you might come up with something like this: 1- "Hello, did you folks lose a white knife? No? How about a black knife? Whew, glad you didn't say 'yes' because then I would have had to fork over my very cool magic knives....here let me show what else they do...." 2- "You folks want to know the biggest problem magician's have? It's the accidental use of their magic power. Here let me show you using my pocket knife." Knife as metaphor for the problems that magicians have, etc. 3- "I went to the fair last week and found this really neat little booth! The sold knives. That's all...so being something of a smart ass AND a magician...which many times is pretty much the same thing...I asked them if they had any 'MAGIC' knives. Welllllll....they said yes and here is what they sold me...." You get the idea. Patter is nothing more than the application of 'tools' that allow you to wander about creatively and come up with stuff. It's not nearly as difficult as it seems once you have a framework for coming up with ideas. Here's an assignment that I used in 20 years running magic schools: Pick something like the Knives. Force yourself to come up with 10 different ideas a day for five days. Don't worry about how good they are or how fully formed. Just brainstorm out 10 ideas a day. Do this a LOT. I absolutely GUARANTEE that with practice you will find that you can come up with neat clever patter virtually anytime you wish. Like the physical techniques of magic, the Pass, the Palm, etc. the mental ones get better and stronger the more you use them. I'll tell you this....of ALL the areas that I have seen magicians have trouble with over the 35 years I have been doing this NOTHING has proven a bigger problem than patter. Nothing! Don't let it defeat you. Look for hooks. Look for reasons why the 'effect' is happening. You will be surprised at how good your patter can be and how original. Best,
