I would take that typecasting. If this is your chance to make it on TV with a series I say take it. The odds are not stacked in your favor any other way. just my opinion though.

It might be an easier to be typed as the mentalist turned actress than vice versa.

Translating Mentalism on tv is no easy task....Many issues to deal with, aside from the treatment(type)of a show.At the end of the day my experience has shown that you must play to the demographic and network.
I think Derren Brown is perhaps the best we have see to date for mentalism, Although aside from mentalists,I think the ratings in the us will not be as good as they are in the uk for him... the treatment may come off as too " documentary style" for "ma and pa" eating tv dinners( Ma and Pa are the largset demo in the )(U.S.) If you play to the largest demo, you are guarenteed the demo rating. If you play to what YOU ( performers/ US ) would like to see..... well Gerry Mcambridge, Alain Nu,Mondo Magic.. etc etc already did that... and sadly didn't quite have the success they were hoping for. So when it comes to tv...REALITY TV.. people think those they see on tv are actors, and to sell mentalism comes of as procedureish and boring...of course you can edit to pick up the pace, but then the public ( and magicians) will claim you are using edits etc to achive the effect.... thinking something happened they did not see. Annebelle I think a woman on tv reading minds may be more interesting to watch then we think! I have a treatment for a show involving a female although based more around pickpoketing and using female persuasion to con/cheat everday life. If you need a TV consultant..... send an email. Great responses and more to think about.
This would be one episode and not a series. I should be so lucky. Being typecast is a huge problem, that's why I haven't jumped at the opportunity. I don't want to go to film and tv auditions and have people say "hey there is that magician chick." Like I said before, I think I can pursue mentalism later in life (though I may no longer have this kind of opportunity). It's tough to decide because right now I feel my alliance is to having an acting career, but then again.... Anabelle |

Take it. The worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't work out. Then you are in the same spot you are in now. Best case scenario...you could be a huge success. I've seen the term, "sexy" mentioned in this thread. I would not rely on "cheesecake", because if you play it more low key, you could pick up a nice female following, and not just a bunch of drooling guys. Havent seen a really good picture of you, but it seems like you could attract a male audience without going overboard and alienating the ladies. Really I cant see a huge downside to this opportunity. If it doesn't work..what have you lost? If it does..you're set. Just my totally unqualified, but hopefully intelligent opinion.

Does that not answer your own question then? If I am understanding you correctly (many here will tell you I cant do that) you don't really want to do this?

Annabelle,
Mentalism will still be here when you get back. Once in a lifetime ... is once in a lifetime. (the movie, "Defending Your Life" comes to mind now) Like the wise man said.. "follow your bliss." Steve |

Hi Annabelle,
1) Mentalism and Magic is all a performance art - so you just need to spin this that it really is about acting - but in a certain way 2) Since you love acting, make that a SIGNIFICANT THEME for whatever your show is about i.e. vary your characters... the way to not be typecast is to not be the same all the time. i.e. it may go in the face of the conventional wisdom of being a "mentalist" 24/7 but who says you need to be conventional? You don't have to be exposing any methods... but there will be the message, different routines/events/stunts are dependant on your character and how a character interacts with the specs: i.e. the glamour person; the psychic; the scared person; the "I got a secret you'll never believe" person... Note: this will show you are an entertainer as opposed to perhaps a "mentalist" - but check out Criss Angel... he must be doing something right. 3) Any positive exposure on TV will Help your career. Unless you end up in a Summer Blockbuster, there is very little chance you will be stuck typecasted. Then again, it may work for you... example Framke Jansen - she started off in some horror SF films.. and because of that got tons of roles... ditto Jessica Alba... spin spin spin 4) spin spin spin Whatever you do, let it follow your passions and strengths or it will be a bust. Good luck, Bruce

Congratulations Anabelle!
If you feel like you're ready, and it's the right thing to do at this point in your life, you should really go for it. My personal opinion is that women have been sidelined in magic as mere assistants in skimpy suits for quite a while, and it would be great to see a girl in the spotlight. If it's a success you could become a role-model for other female acts, just like I'm sure Derren Brown and David Blaine have got people into magic/mentalism. Laura |

Hihi!!! I've been having the same worries anabelle (as my dad said before), my dad wants me to do a tv pilot or something and I'm MAJORLY worried about being typecast! my main focus is also on acting, I've always wanted to act! and being only 12, I think I might have an opportunity to try it out, but the question is, what happens if I get typecast?? and what will I do to achieve my biggest dream and become a pop star/actress if I do!?! because ive also been asked to do many radio shows and a guy wants me to do a tv pilot too...

Kyleen, my confusion about what to do here is the main reason for this post. It's a way to reach out and help me make a decision one way or the other. I have some time to think, I'm not under pressure right now. I just don't know, though there are many wonderful suggestions and encouragement here. Follow your heart. That's what I'm trying to do.

Well anabelle, if you do decide to do this pilot, I have a WONDERFUL effect that you can do! I'm not trying to pressure you to do the show with this, but it would be a great effect anywhere! I could perform it for you tonight over the phone or something...my dad just taught me a newer version of the one I did over the radio last year... so please pm me if your interested!

Just do it. Never regret the decisions you make - only regret missed opportunities. If you are talented enough as an actress then you should be able to use this opportunity to jump start that. Many people have started in one area of entertainment and moved to another.

Just on the decision,
if you decide to go with it, you'll wonder what would have happened if you didn't go with it. if you decide not to do the show, you'll wonder what would have happened if you went and did the show. It's a mind game of it's own. You'll always wonder the other option because whatever you do, it WILL affect your life. So it all comes down to this - would you rather wonder what would of happened if you didn't do this? Or what would of happened if you did it? I realize you didn't ask for advice on decision making but I just had to be nosy. |

Anabelle, I haven't read through every post on here, but I had a thought on this one for you...
Do what makes you happy and gets you to the place that YOU want to be. Don't do like so many in the public eye do and compromise yourself for a few fleeting minutes on the tele! And remember this: once you've compromised who you are, you can't take it back..no matter how hard you try. I live in Nashville, TN: the so-called, "home of country music", but there are musiciaons of all types here: jazz, rock, blues, classical...you get the idea. The very reason that I moved here was to play music, but gave that up for different pursuits...like, making a living and paying the bills! That aside, I meet people from all over the US that tell me how they'd love to come to Nashville to "make it big", and my advise is the same every time: If you are good/great at what you do where you are, fame will find you. But if you aren't, don't go chasing it because it is an elusive, destructive thing. Better to be happy at doing what you love in a local market than be stuck in an image you can't get rid of on a national level.. Hope you can find something worthwhile in my assorted ramblings... Rick
