Had a questions as to whether or not someone could help me find the originator of the idea I'm about to pass by you all. There's a mentalist trick I started doing with packets of cards where I would appear to have the 4 aces. I would go through the magicians force to show that the one they selected is the only face up one in the packet of four cards. When the other cards are flipped the three cards are shown to have been blank. I've recently added a new twist to it by doing a brainwave sort of idea where not only does the selected ace become the only face up ace but has a different colored back than the rest of them and then show the other 3 cards are blank. Im almost certain I wasn't the first person to think of this effect. Any help with giving originators or people who are responsible for variations and twists would be most appreciated.

You're not. B'Wave does this. Been doing it for ... oh, I've been using it for about 10 years I would guess.

Illusionist,
One of my favorite packet Brainwave effects is a three-phase routine by Jon Racherbaumer called ‘Fried Thrice’. Credit is given to both Ed Marlo and Max Maven for the particular phases of the routine. It is a very well structured routine and worth learning if you like this kind of Brainwave. The Workers and Deckless forums might be a good place to ask about this. Steve |

Hello Illusionist987,
Yes, the exact effect you describe (a GAFFLESS B'wave effect with blank unselected cards and the selected card having a different colored back) is a description of Alain Nu's "Nu Wave". Alain worked out very subtle and psychologically appropriate presentational applications of eqivoce in addition to Boolean logic, to lead the spectators down the garden path and optimize the final revelation. Alain has been doing this effect for many years, in fact, in the 1990's I saw him slay a roomful of NIH scientists with this very effect. This effect, and others is available in Alains lecture notes "XXX" (hardcore mentalism). You can order it here; http://www.magicalthinking.net/nu.html Douglas M. |

Well worth the money too... love the thinking behind nu wave...
The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.
