Cabinet of Curiosities - Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July 2007, Blackpool, UK.
"...the Winter Gardens will be the venue for a reconstruction of a Victorian museum of curiosities with side-shows, novelty acts and an exhibition of material from the National Fairground Archive's rich holdings. The wondrous Spanish Hall, Baronial Suite and Horseshoe Pavilion and Theatre will host the equivalent of Barnum’s American Museum, with highlights including the Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, The Headless Wonder first seen on Blackpool’s Golden Mile in the 1930s, and a wide range of spellbounding tributes to the world of Edwardian and Victorian performance" A must for sideshow enthusiasts! I'll be there working the two original 1950s sideshows and performing some sideshow acts. It would be great to meet up with anybody who can make it - should be a great weekend! http://www.nfa.dept.shef.ac.uk/projects/blackpool.html http://www.blackpool.gov.uk/News/Livingm......tory.htm http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/ViewArtic......=3002395 |

4 hours aint bad!
You can always find a B&B for about £2.50 a night (in some parts of blackpool! - you may want to stay away from thoes though!). I am tempted to head on up that way. Dave |

Cheers Doug - as if I needed any more persuasion to get a 'Zibit! Definitely high on my list, especially after the sensation of 'Little Doug' in Hull! I'll be in touch...
Corona, you're always welcome of course! Consider yourself on the guest list (although I think it's free to get in anyway...) Seriously though, come along if you can make it - you could bring your little friend to work as an illicit blow-off |

Hi Tim...Gee...Gosh...Egad even! Wasn't really trying to entice you to buy stuff...just check out the fun that was Kondini's tour for the Royal's and hoping some of that success rubs off on your show!
So you are the guy who wrote the excellent 'scientific' description for 'Little Doug' in Hull? Nice work! Funny how both 'Little Doug' and Corona's success with it in Hull and the Kondini RECORD BREAKING Grind show tour all over the UK in the highest circles and Castles and Universities will be passed over by those who write the history of such things and look to Barnum nostalgia and other dead sources and recreations rather than breathing participants and still living examples of a healthy enterprise in their midst. Oh well.

Ah Doug - I think it was more of a case of you reading my mind - subconsciously enticing me towards a zibit perhaps I certainly hope some of Kondini´s success rubs off, and I´ll make sure our national fairground archive is aware of the current successes going on! I´m sure P. T. Higley has a place reserved in the history books too...
It´s nice to be able to add a bit of pseudo-science to the proceedings! I´m on a collecting trip in Brazil at the moment; haven´t managed to find any Chupacabras yet though... Do people know about Dr. Fryte´s Freak Show currently working the fairgrounds over here? It´s having great success too as a very modern version of a very old sideshow. As far as I know this is just a one off, but our sideshows will definitely be making more appearances. I´ll keep posting details here, and the website is being constructed as we speak! Would be great to hear from anyone who can make it to Blackpool. |

They really took their time to get this item broadcast, but 'The Cabinet of Curiosities' in Blackpool was featured on BBC Radio 4 this morning (on Woman's Hour !), including our 1950s sideshows from http://www.sideshowillusions.com (notice the cheeky plug?!) and the other contemporary shows we built for other performers.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/02/2007_45_thu.shtml Have a listen before they take this down - click on the 'listen to this item' link. Hope you enjoy it! Tim |
