I'm a performer that prefer to do card trick that envolve the signature of a spectator, if not a mark or lable that id's the selected card. In my opinion is even more powerful the effect because you tell the audience (without saying a word) that there are no duplicate cards. Sevral of my favorite tricks that I prefer are the famous "Ambitious Card Routine" and a new effect called "Amazing Materializing Signature". This last one is excellent because you transfer a signature from one card to the other, creating in the spectator a stunning moment. They won't beleive their eyes when this happens.
Some performers do not give card to the spectator to sign because they think it's a damage to the card and can't be used again. I personaly reuse the signed card if they are signed in the face, because if it's signed in the back it will be damaged. What is your opinion? |

Generally always have them sign their card. They might forget in the heat of the moment...or just flat out lie!
FWIW Cheers!

I also just let em sign the card. They are cheap anyway so I don't mind wasting decks while working. I have occassionally also had half dublicate deck in my pocket and added card from that deck to my working one and forced it so I can still keep using 52 card deck even if I give cards away. Also I have possibility to do very clean card to pocket before signing card and also some other tricks with dublicates. Cody Fisher also had some work on getting around the deck getting thin when signing cards. His post about it is somewhere in Café so I wont go into details here.

Any ideas on reusing the same cards after removing the signature? Erasable ink pens, erasable marker? Has anyone tied it ?

For tricks where a card ends up in wallet, pocket or is to be torn and restored it disproves use of a duplcate.
I don't feel that it's necessary for all pick a card tricks. If I do an effect where the card(s) don't fly off somewhere, the deck and my hands remain in view or the deck is spread face up and/or examinable I won't have the card signed. John, If the face is signed then it can be used again for a second and even third signature. It can actually add to the effect. |

If you see one of my performing deck, maybe 20 card are signed and maybe 10 are signed more than once (recycle because of global warming). Now when one of the signature of the card passes from one card to the other then it's a mind blower.
The Amazing Materializing Signature does the job. Try it you will like it. |

Signed for sure...it adds much more to the routine. It shows that the spectator's card is indeed their's. It is the reason most card to wallets are gaffed...if we didn't sign cards, a lot of effects would be pretty bland in my opinion.

I just give them away. that one card is worth more to that person than it is to me. plus I use a pink deck, people love the pink cards but some times have a hard time with the white pips. signing the card helps. I must have given 7 cards tonight.

So, just curious, but what does a thread specifically about whether or not cards should be signed, have to do with gaffed and funkey?

Although I am not a professional magician, I am a hobbyist in magic who never undermines the power of letting spectators sign our cards. There are many advantages of course. If you let spectators sign cards, they will feel that they are being respected in the performance (spectator thinks... why should he let ME sign the card?). This is especially true for people who you don't know that well. If you really mind the fact of "signing is equal to destroying," I would recommend that strangers sign them instead, although I am not discouraging you to let family members or friends sign them too. Another good point of signing cards makes it the only card with "your" signature in the entire world.
I would like to share an interesting story of mine here. I have the habit of bringing a new deck with me to every foreign country that I visit, and I would only use that deck in that country and try to get as many signatures on them as possible. I remember I still have such a deck which I used in France last year, and I had many people (I did some street magic there) sign my cards. After I came back to my home country, I examined the deck, and it reminded me of the people who I performed to, and the great time I had over there. Not only do signing cards reinforce the value of spectators or distinguishes as the only card in the entire universe, they also may be valuable to you if you happen to have the same weird habit as I do. Of course, the one major disadvantage of signing cards is equivalent to destroying them. If you compare the benefits to the disadvantages, it surely seems to me at least, that signing cards has certainly more "good" points than "bad" points. Hope that helped! Charles

As for "destroying" them, they are pennies a card, lol.
Heck, then signing the card automatically gives motivation to tear it, for those always looking for motive in a T&R.

Since I am a smoker I have learned to place a different value on a pack of cards. This is due to the fact that I can buy two packs of cards every day for the price of one pack of cigarettes. As a casual performer I doubt I'll ever go through over 700 decks a year. Basically if I only get one performance out of a deck I'm good with that. I'm thinking about even giving away a pack after a performance. That would give me good reason to use the E custom decks. If anyone thought they were gimmicked before the routine, being able to take them home will squash those doubts.

Figure it should just be in the card workers forum.

Buy a pinocle deck and for all the dupicates during your show and then replace them....will save you a lot of money. And the signiture is the difference....i know a person who literally framed their signed card(no joke!)...thats the lasting impression we aim for, and signing the cards keep the aim on target.

Does anyone know how to move this thread to the card workers forum. Aparently it disturbs some people.

It would need to be done by a mod. Nothing to really worry about. Just suggesting that when you want to talke specifically about the merits of signing a card, or anything else that does not have to do with gimmicks specifically, then the best place to find the best feed back would be in a different area.
You will get better attention to the topic in the appropriate place. That is all.

I always have multiple people sign it... draw pictures on it, put the date, etc.
However, I only do this on card to impossible location effects. |
