I have seen a few routines using Morgan silver dollars and I would like to do these routines and I it may take up to 6 of the coins. I just want to know if any magic dealer, which one is the best for buying these particular coins? I would like good quality ones too. That is an important factor. If there aren't any magic dealers that sell good inexpensive ones could you recommend any other places? Thanks.

Try looking at the yellow pages under coin shops, you can usually call and ask to see if they have scrap coins, those are the typical ones magicians use. You can usually get a better price..

YES!! make Friends with a coin shop owner.
You'll find what's valuable to the magician is JUNK to the serious coin collector.. therefore not very expensive. We like coins that are smooth and have wear- they don't "talk" so much. Also, you'll discover interesting foreign coins of all shapes, colors and sizes. They too are usually dirt cheap! Happy Hunting!

Evan,
I pick up my silvers at a local coin dealer who works out of his house and because of this I can get them cheaper than any coin dealer in the Los Angeles area. I picked up my very good liberty halves some time ago for $2 a piece and very good Morgan 1921's for $7 each. You obviously can pick up "good" or junk coins for less. Regards, Tony |

Tony is right. You can pick up Morgans for around 7 bucks at your local coin shop. I buy mine from a place called Columbia Coin Co. in downtown Portland. The elderly man who owns the store used to be friends with the Harry Blackstone Jr. and Sr.
He gives me about a 10 percent discount on all the coins I buy because he is interested in magic too. Two days ago I bought four 1890's circa Morgan Dollar coins. $7.48 for each one. Anyway, im rambling on. Check out junk stores and your local coin collector stores. |

In the Washington DC area the going price for junk silver dollars seems to be closer to $10.00 US.
I agree that it is good to become well known to a coin dealer. Whenever I go into my favorite shop, the owner always brings out his junk silver bags. |

Ebay usually has Morgans for around $8, but you pay shipping, which adds to the price.

I've gotten Morgan 1/2's and Walking Liberty $'s off E-bay on "Dutch Auctions". Seller gives a dollar amount for each and you can get as many as you like. I've even dealt with some sellers that have searched thru and found me matching dates and condition. Cost was around $6. S/H wasn't all that much!
Cheers!

Here in New Jersey, we have lots of Flee Markets. Most of them have 1 guy that has a coin shop and will make deals with you. Because of the economy, you will find that they have gone up in price. Also, if you find someone in a flee market, let them know you are a magician and ask them if they ever get any unusual coins in. You will be surprised how many gaffed coins you may find. C/S coins, shells, etc..

Ebay was my source. You can get them as single Morgans or in lots. I bought one lot from Coastal Coin Co on Ebay and was very satified with their quick service.
