Well, A lot Actually.
In many MAJOR concert venu's here in the state's its not uncommon to have security WAND you before entering the venue. Also. During the show if someone is spotted (and I have herd david verbally telling people to put the camera away before I TAKE IT comments) Have security escort that individual out of the theatre, take their camera's and so -on. CIRQUE DU. IS VERY serious about this sort of thing. I saw someone DURING a show have their camera confiscated and MADE to delete the images off of it. (with a police officer present) So. MANY things can be done. Just they must pick their battles. |

I agree with you Ryan but still there are people who will do it and not everyone will be noticed. The whole thing depend on the people not just David and crew.

Videoing things is a little naughty, but the footage is usually rubbish picture/sound quality anyway. If people pay their bucks they should be allowed to take a picture, etc. The fans make the likes of Copperfield.
When a performer threatens personally to take a camera that is wrong. I'm sure Lars Ulrich will disagree though, DJM is still on the run! |

Reed- the car appearance is the tail end of the "Lottery" routine, which is basically an extended "Graffiti Wall" routine. The first phase of the illusion is the same as "Graffiti Wall," with a large surface, randomly selected audience members, and spray paint. Instead of the prediction being in an envelope hanging from a street lamp, it's in a locked box in a Plexiglass case hanging high above the audience.
The second phase is the revelation - and not only does the prediction get revealed on a large sheet of paper, but it's also on an audio tape. And, DC's grandfather's old license plates are shown to have the same numbers as the spectators' selections. Then, they move onto the car appearance. All the phases use random spectators - no stooges, and it's a very cool routine! The TV specials follow written scripts. So while the people appearing may not be "stooges" per se, they are following a specific set of instructions in order to make sure the illusion comes off the way it is supposed to - including the use of jokes, as seen in the old Graffiti Wall clip. And, as was already said, they will do multiple takes to get it just right. Everyone in the audience at a TV taping learns how everything works. I believe it was Gary Oulette who said that when doing magic for TV, the live audience matters not - the 1000 people in attendance will probably learn how every trick you do is done. But, it's the greater, much larger TV audience of millions of people that matters the most. As long as they experience the magic as you intend, you have accomplished your goal. At the live shows, the spectators are indeed chosen at random. However, they may be "chosen at random" before the show begins, so that they may be briefed about what they might need to say in order to make a joke work (i.e. the duck bucket slo-motion joke). Even if they are chosen randomly during the performance, they might get a note or instruction from DC or from an assistant instructing them on what to say or how to act. Going way back to the original topic - that being the level of applause on the Car Appearance clip. The clip appears to have been recorded with a home video camera or possibly a cell phone camera or digital camera video function. On the recording it's possible to hear one or two people clapping, and the audio is otherwise distorted and inaudible. My guess is that the camera's poor sound pickup ability is what is causing people to think there isn't much applause going on there. --Jack |

Wow, Copperfield must read the Café or he found the clip on youtube as well.
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by David Copperfield Disappearing, Inc. Or, maybe Waldo turned it in!

Quite a few misleading and/or ill-informed posts in this thread. Suffice to say that the routine does 'make sense' (if magic ever does/is supposed to do so), isn't regarded by the audience (the only people that matter) as 'stupid', and does indeed use randomly selected audience members on-stage, which serves to drastically enhance the impact.
Further, I'm glad to see the law being upheld. This is not a question of 'who knows - you decide' morality/ethics on this occasion - this is an (alas, all too common) copyright claim on grounds of illegality. Simple, really. [Well done for spotting it, Waldo... If only I could be as successful in spotting YOU in those books...] Besides, I've already seen the live show. A much richer experience, to my mind. |
