I'm interested in talking with others that work in tropical climates. I'm used to working in S.F., where sporting formal wear, or a biz suit is quite normal. Now I'm in the Caribbean, and will be doing most walk-around in shorts, and perhaps a Hawaiian shirt with two pockets. I'm used to custom pockets, topits, pulls, etc.
The only recent revelation I've come up with is a change-bag called a change-cap. I'm trying to work out a pull which relies on bogus lower buttons on the shirt, and a streamlined pull object. Pulling a flip-flop out of someones back pocket is not nearly as exciting as a tasseled loafer. Taking the full beer out of the shoe is gone too. I'm curious how many folks are forced to work in such conditions, and any brilliant thoughts they may have regarding tropical attire. Thanks, Ted

I lived and worked for 3 years in the Florida Keys. I work in Mexico now. Here is the best answer you will find.
Tropical clothing is by its very nature light. It does not hold up well to having things attatched to it such as pulls, topits, and yada yada yada. The IDEA is to have on as few layers as possible. Here is what is worse, wait till your cards are useless after one or 2 hours. I MEAN UELESS. Your sponges stick in the pockets, and any card gimicks get swollen immediatly. The only recourse is to do more slight of hand with cards that does not require gimicks, to just do things like cups and balls, don't use super soft sponge ANYTHING, and just go for it! You will adjust, it is the humidity that is killing you. In Key Largo they had "misters" outside on the outdoor patio to keep it cool. Talk about a nightmare!

Maybe you could wear "deck shoes" instead of Flip Flops.
I wouldn't think coins and dice would be greatly affected by your climate. You could do the Copper Silver Transposition or an ungimmicked Coins Across, possibly the Sacks Dice or Dice Stacking, you might be able to use the Dice cup for a Chop Cup routine. |

Hi Ted,
Danny Doyle couldn't be more wrong here if he tried. Cards will last forever in any climate. I'm from Ohio, and we have some pretty hot days up here lemme tell ya...and it's never been a problem for me. Can't imagine it would be any different a few degrees latitude south. That talk about sponge balls going bad is a joke too. Sponges come from the WATER Danny!!! Do you really think a little humidity is going to effect them? Gimme a break. And if wearing as few layers as possible is Danny's advice, then why doesn't his avatar have a bunny in a speedo? I wear a tux every time I go out. Overcoat, top hat, cane, dove har****, the works. You gotta be da magic man if you gonna be da magic man. Be careful with the advice you take from these forums Ted. Some people are just looking for a fight. |

Wow! I wonder what is in the water in Chad's sponges. Cards plus humidity makes for a very misshaped deck of cards. I know automatically that when I'm hired to perform walk around outside in the summer, it is a minimum of 2 decks to be used. I'm from Chicago where it gets pretty humid. Comparing the humidity in Ohio and Illinois might be fine. Comparing the humidity in the midwest with Florida or in the tropics....not even close.
I have to believe Chad's post was tongue in cheek. If so that was a funny one. If not, as I said, Wow! Patrick |

Oh well. Listen to people from Ohio about the tropics if you like. It is somewhat akin to listening to people who "think they know" about magic instead of someone actually working.
It is actually a perfect illustration actually. Let us know how it works out for you. No fight needed. IF it was tongue in cheek, then cool too.

OK, I digress. Perhaps I should come to the tropics and see for myself.
What 5 tricks would you recommend that I bring with me? And could you share Tropical specific patter to go along with them? I like the hot rod, scotch and soda, Svengali deck, and silk with TT myself. Do you have any patter lines that I could use with them? If I get to liking it down there, perhaps I'll do some birthday shows as well. Do you know of any Lantino specific DVDs that have entire shows on them, ready to perform without practice needed? I hate to practice...waste of time if you ask me. There's just no money in it far as I can tell. Patter, patter, patter. It's all about the patter anyways. Gotta love the patter. A link to a website where I could get all the props in one stop would be helpful too. Thanks, Chad |

I could recommend "25 Amazing Tricks With Ridilin". I'm not sure who produces it, but a google search could help. I'm not sure how well the Latino DVD's would go over in Jamaica or the Bahamas.
This is almost fun. |

Glad I could offer you a yuk or 2 Patrick. I'm in the middle of finals week and I'm about to crack with stress.
I figured this thread would be the one where NOBODY would question Danny's opinion. I actually regard Danny's opinions very highly. Sorry if it came off as an actual attack Danny! I've got to stop the caffein pills and posting. One or the other has gots to go. |

Man...I almost don't wanna get involved here......but.....
I work in Mississippi where the humidity is like 150%...or so it seems. And my experience IS that cards become useless very very quickly. I go through several packs in a day during outdoor venues. Dorian LaChance

Hi Ted,
Wearing a cap also offers possibilities for Malini-type loads when the situation arises. For your climate, maybe using wadded paper napkins instead of sponges could work (ditch them for fresh ones after they've absorbed too much humidity). Greg Wilson has a good "napkins as spongeballs" routine. If the cap is sturdy enough, maybe a Benson Bowl routine could be done. It is too hot currently in my locale to wear a jacket (or, in my opinion, clothes), yet I love doing Roth's one coin routine using the "lapel" coin. If I am wearing a collared shirt, I just affix the coin under the right collar and modify the routine. If the collar is too flexible, or If I am wearing a collarless shirt, I adapt by affixing the coin just under the upper right short sleeve. Using the ersatz shirt buttons idea, you can also use the gap as a sideways (small object) Topit. Tommy Womder used a Cumberbund or "belly" servante in Visions of Wonder, but if your shirt is untucked then such a device would be impractical. Volume I of the Fitch Topit DVD set explains topiting using just a shirt and tie. Douglas M. |

I didn't mind myself as I like it hot. But my cards absorbed the water ( maybe beacuse they are made of PAPER???). My point is I could have told Jim I've worked in Phoenix in 110 degrees and never had a problem, so I'll be fine. Instead I took the word of a Pro offering valued advice. I think the original poster would be wise to take Danny Doyle's advice. Maybe, just maybe, Danny working the climate being talked about, he might have some first hand professional knowledge that could help.

Hello Christopher,
Your post is entirely correct. If you were to read the rest of this thread, you may note that I was joking when I made the first 2 posts. I was sure that this was to be the one thread that NOBODY would question Danny on. He is, after all, a highly successful worker in the correct part of the world to answer this question. He was the perfect one to answer and gave a great response. I was simply making a joke. I even sent Danny a PM after I posted to inform him of my post out of respect for him and to tell him that I was just blowing off some steam. I'm a teacher, getting my Master's in Math over the summers. It's exam time right now and I'm studying like a dog. I was just hopped up on caffein, without sleep, and a little slap happy when I posted those remarks. I don't even know what a dove har**** looks like to be honest...and I don't own a tux coat. I'd also like to apologize to Ted while I'm at it. Sorry for taking this thread in a different direction. Yours was a great question, and I led it astray. Hopefully, the thread can get back on track. |

I will agree with cards being a problem in the heat. I'll go through a deck an hour. But spongeballs I have never had a problem with in the heat or humidity. I recently did a 2 hour gig under a tent for 200 people. It was walk-a-round and 94°f. The biggest problem I found were gnats! They were all around my ears and I could feel them crawling in and out while I was in the middle of my routines. Probably the worst performing experience I have ever had. Anyone else?

Mosquitoes, mosquitoes, and more mosquitoes.
Walk around outside in the evening....load up on the Backwoods Off cologne. Nothing worse than being in the middle of an Elmsley Count and seeing a mosquito drilling a hole in your arm. Well, I'm sure there are some things in life that are worse, but it still isn't fun. Patrick |

I'm really surprised to hear that the sponges would be affected. I was actually told to misten my super softs a little bit so that they would be more responsive. I'm not up to performing with them yet, so I cant really say. But that isn't what I expected to hear. I live in Tennessee, and while it gets hot, the humidity is just about right (not too wet or too dry). So....
