Hey all. Just finished typing up a letter of recommendation for the GM at Red Robin to sign. I was wondering if you all could let me know how it sounds?
------------------------------------------------ To whom it may concern; This is a letter of recommendation for Magician Steven Simmons. Since December of 2006, I’ve had the pleasure of having Steven perform here at Red Robin in Waldorf, Maryland. On top on being a highly skilled performer, he is also extremely passionate and dedicated to his craft. From the countless times I’ve seen Steven perform here at Red Robin, he has had audiences of all ages laughing and having a fantastic time. His magic is high energy, funny, and extremely entertaining. It’s not an understatement to say I’ve had tons of tables stop me to tell me how much they love Steven, and other times to tell me that they’re upset because the magician isn’t working tonight. On top of Steven being a great magician and overall entertainer, he is also very professional. Steven always handles himself a very professional manner. That includes the way he speaks with restaurant staff and guests and the way he carries himself. He also dresses very professional as well. On top of the high level of professionalism he strives for, Steven is also very easy to work with. As with other entertainers, there is sometimes an added hassle on the restaurant. This is/was never the case with hiring Steven, and even today, he is very flexible and has an easy going style and positive attitude. Steven’s professionalism is easily seen in his flexibility, patience and communication skills. I would be happy to offer a recommendation any time and look forward to that opportunity. Respectfully, --------------------------------------- That's a rough copy. I am still working on it, but would like some feedback from people that have actually done this before. Thanks, Steve |

Sounds like a letter a magician wrote for his boss to sign.
Why not let him write one and see how it sounds?

Danny,
Thanks man. He actually told me to write it up, because he's too busy. He said write it up, and he'd sign it and have it "authorized". Thanks! Steve |

Well it sounds exactly like you wrote it.
No offence but people don't talk like that. It sounds as if it came from your web page. People reading these letters are NOT STUPID. They will notice.

Hmm...I'll go and try to fix it. Any ideas on how to make it sound like an over-confident magician (all magicians are arrogant in one way atleast LOL) didn't write it?
Thanks! Steve |

Steve:
A real letter of recommendation from a client is usually brief. Why not personalize it? Have him "write" a thank you note which you are sharing as a letter of recommendation. Steve: On behalf of the staff and management at Red Robin, I want to thank you for your weekly performances here at the restaurant. It is obvious from the reactions of our patrons that you are truly a skilled magician. We have received many positive comments regarding your close-up magic performances on our Wednesday family nights since we started featuring you last December of 2006. I look forward to your continued appearances at our restaurant, and would happily recommend your services to anyone looking for a good, entertaining magician. Sincerely, Fred Hufflepuff General Manager If the guy were to really write something for you, it would be brief and to the point. If you are wanting this to secure more bookings, then real people would tend to believe my letter as oppose to yours. My 2¢ Chris |

If you could say your message in one sentence only, what would it be? If you had the perfect letter from him, and you were able to quote only one line, what would you want him to tell other prospective customers?
You can build a few more sentences than that one line, but I try to pull out one sentence or one string of words (only part of a sentence) to convey the core message at a glance. Whenever I quote from a testimonial letter (I can't ever recall having written my own, on behalf of a customer), I look for a pull quote to emphasise, as well as a main block to quote. - Donald

Steve,
It is not unusual in the sales world to write your own reference letter. But Danny is right, what you have is a little over the top. I would tone it down a little. Regards, Brady |

All good advice. To sum it up:
Tone it down Shorten it up Make it a thank you letter to you rather than a To Whom It May Concern

In my opinion, you did not use the word 'professional' or 'professionalism' enough times...I would at least double it.
