Never thought Delores Umbridge and her kitten plates would inspire folks to buy books on card tricks but what the heck.

If it works more power to it. Movies like Karate kid, side kicks, and a dozen other chop sockey movies were almost sickening to serious martial artists, but filled the karate schools with students. Houdini might not have been the greatest magician in the world, but keeping his legend alive still sells tickets to magic shows. I've seen the $20 birthday magician who only did a few Adams package tricks inspire a kid to get into magic. What ever sparks the interest, more power to it.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

The wrong kind of interest IMHO.
Those without an interest in offering entertainment have little good use of/for the mechanics of guile IMHO. IE you cannot buy clever or compensate for a lack of social graces by "doing tricks".

I'm secretary of a magic group and although it's a nice news story I'm not sure it is true that there is a link between wanting to watch and read Harry Potter books or films, and wanting to practice magic. I don't think our local magic shop has noticed any connection either.
The local newspapers and television are producing feature stories about our beginners magic group to link up with the new book launch, so by the weekend I should be able to state any connection; at least in this area of England. |
