Just a quick survey - how many of us here also run/work/build haunted houses? I've noticed quite a number of people refering to ones they've worked on?

I do. I have built, directed, designed, and/or acted in haunted houses for about 15 years. This year I will be building a
theatre for bizarre magick routines adjacent to several haunted houses. Anybody out there from the Portland Oregon area interested in performing? Dave |

I used to run a Haunted House (Home Haunt)back in Winnipeg. It's now defunct because I moved to Vancouver. I'm amazed that I haven't been able to find a single haunt here in Vancouver. Oh well.
And now I've left all my cool Hallowe'en gear back in frozen Manitoba. I feel so empty. =( Theatre for Bizarre Magick? That sounds fantastic! Oh to be in Portland Oregon! -Sean Covernton |

I worked with Britania Manor a couple of times when it was alive. I've done Austin's Haunted Trails a few times as well. Had a very enjoyable magic-related station there one time.

For three years, I used to work a local haunted house sponsored by a major radio station as a "greeting spectre," frightening and entertaining those waiting in line.

Living in Edinburgh it is steeped in history and haunted buildings. We have numerous torture chambers. We also have a thriving "ghost walk" tour industry. We also have an underground city which was built over because of the plague and you can still go down into it and see the streets shops etc under the ground!
A number of years ago I tried to bring a theatrical seance to edinburgh. There is a witches temple underground and I tried to build a seance room next to it. The rioom itself was the location where the last witches in Scotland were tried and executed. Across the road about 50 yards they built a posh hotel about 10 years ago. Someone fell down the dumb waiter and died there. There is so much that could be done as in entertainment the history and atmosphere is perfect for bizzare type performances. I even wanted to create another show called "Labatory conditions".....which wouold be an sep show set in a room made to look like a labatory. I had my business plan had the effects planned and at last minute the owner wouldn't allow it to go ahead because it would over shadow most of his events! Its still waiting to be taken advantage of! Shrink... good luck with your profects but just be carefull. In a location that could be haunted. The haunted mansion where i work at is rumered to have been he location of a suicide. I didn't believe it at first but some weird things have happened. Ive had an emergency exit that was locked I might add swing open violently. Ive felt things touch my legs had things whispered in my ear etc etc. A girl was crying once because something would keep pokeing her shoulder. The stupidest thing I ever did was try to film the mantion by myself. I was all by myself in a dark hallway and i pannicked and ran out, my face paler then any theatrical makeup could make it.
Good luck and always work with a partner, you don't want to find your by yourself. Jonathan

The train is a small engine with open-sided cars behind it, and during the Halloween season they "haunt" the route for night trips. Judging by the public response, more venues of this type could do quite well out here. There were frequently four hour waits for tickets on a ride that took over a hundred people at a time for a 15 minute ride. When I lived in Ottawa, there was this great farm in Munster (that's really the name of the town) that had "haunted hayrides". The farm was covered with hedge mazes, haunted buildings, etc. I'm really surprised I have found nothing like that in the Fraser Valley area. If you get the urge to start a haunt in Vancouver, let us know, I know I would want to help. -bigwolf {*}

I was talking to some people I knew in the industry before I moved out here in the hopes of finding something. I found one or two seasonal small places.. one was really more of a display with no real theatrical content. The only other thing I found was out in Victoria. I remember when I was really young there was a haunt of some kind here (might have been in Victoria comne to think of it). Oh and there's a small charity haunt in the West End at the Community Centre, but nothing that terribly professional in any way unfortunately. yeah you'd think there would be a market for something like that out here.
Heh... let's just pick an alley somewhere in Gastown and start haunting it ourselves. Maybe someone'll give us money =) -Sean Covernton |

About 90% of the TV shows I currently watch are filmed at least partially in this area (John Doe, Dead Zone, Smallville, Andromeda, Beyond Belief, previously Dark Angel, and the list goes on, not to mention movies like X-Men) plus the lower mainland population is measured in the millions now. Gastown would be an awesome area for such a thing (that steam clock is pretty ghostly) but I suspect that an alley would be the only affordable space down there. And knowing Gastown, we probably wouldn't be the scariest things in the alley... Seriously though, I'm thinking one of the many theatre schools or effects schools or production studios could use such a thing to showcase talent, so there might be an angle there to explore. They also might have a better chance at negotiating decent performance space. Has anyone heard of other schools or studios doing such a thing?

Obviously, this group will not have exactly the same perspecive as our target audience, but if you have a second could you stop by my web site and take our poll. We are using the information to make decisions on what bizarre magick routines to include in our shows this year...

I've been part of a charity haunted house in Tampa for the last twelve years. I'm suffering from the opposite problem, hard to get anyone to notice a charity haunt when your competing with Busch Gardens and Universal Studios.

I loved playing Dracula, many years ago, before the haunted houses. We did it in my friends garage and yard. People from all around came to vist that house.
It was fun, and crazy stuff to do!

Hi Covernton and Bigwolf, The fellow that handles such events in your area is named Frank M. He's been doing a haunted house for years and does a lot of work for the movie industry. There is also a wonderful Haunted Tour that takes people through the dark alleys of Commercial drive. I have Franks number is you are interested as he is currently planning on building a Museum.All the best and good luck!
