I always think it's funny when someone asks a simple question about compensation and people get all up in arms. You'd think they were being asked for a kidney! Why on earth should we be so secretive about what we charge for our services? We have no problem telling a CUSTOMER what we charge, so why should we be so offended when a COLLEAGUE asks, especially if that colleague works three states over?
With that said, in response to the Poster's original question I can only say this: It's none of your d**n business what I charge! (that's a joke, of course)

Why are us magic types (not all but most) scared to say what we earn, or if we do, we often inflate it just to make ourselves look good?
I have no problem telling what I earn as a table hopper. Bear in mind I live in Australia and Aussies don't, generally tip. I work 2 hotel restaurants per week, one every Friday night - been there for 9 years, and one every Saturday night - been there 8 years. My Friday night gig I get $80.00 per hour and work for one hour ($80) - I haven't had a pay rise in 9 years, but I got a gig. My Saturday gig I charge $100.00 per hour and work an hour and a half ($150)- upped the fee from $80.00 per hour to $100.00 a couple years ago. Not only do I sometimes get tips but more importantly I get corporate and other bookings as a direct result of these 2 gigs.

Here's a old thread the second post in which gives a definitive answer; it's probably as good a rule-of-thumb today as it was in 2002.

The big reasons guys don't like to tell what they make are these.
It is a problem when someone sees you put something down here. NOT because of any fear of copetition, not by a long shot. BUT if you don't put down exactly what people think (and I stress think because 90% of those critical are NOT WORKING) then you hear one of 2 things. First is that you are flat out making things up. When high rates are quoted people think because they can't get that in their area you are a liar. So you get called that. Second thing you get is "that is not enough". Everyone has an opinion and you get every one of them at once. So, for me at least, it is better NOT to answer in any fashion. I make allusions to it, but never nail it down. It is easier than putting up with the nonsense from every non worker who "thinks he knows". I am not speaking of anyone individually, and assume everyone reading falls into that 10% of workers here, and am not trying to start a flame thread, but these are the reasons which keep pros quiet. Plus, many of us have never really discussed salary no matter WHAT the profession. Just the way some are in general. Nothing wrong with those who do though. BUT there is nothing wrong with those who don't either.

Well said DannyDoyle ... I have always been open about my salary or fees for gigs. I fully understand if that is "not your scene" and I respect you for your decision to keep money issues close to your chest.
I have been a "worker" for nearly 30 years, the last 15 of those as a full time professional, and the previous 15 as a semi pro. At 61 I have been 'into' magic for 53 years. I sense that you are a real worker as well.

Hart, thank you. Seriously.
Roy thank you as well. I am often far too blunt and I am glad I was able to come across in the right non confrontational fashion this time, as what I was trying to convey was NOT anything nasty, only a view is all to try to point out the reasons. Glad it worked.
