Why would you want a sharpie to light flash paper??
Seems a bit odd. A lighter is just as good! M:C |

Matt,
If handled right it would look like the paper ignited spontaneously. That isn't odd. That's magic!! |

Seems really illogical, unless you wrote with the pen first.
If you picked a pen out of your pocket for no reason then the flash paper exploded... ahh nevermind...good luck. |

Matt brings up a good point, one appicable to everything we do - the magic has to be motivated somehow, or it becomes suspicious, sonehow less magical. That is not to say that the sharpie can't be motivated, but it falls on the performer to ensure that the sharpie draws no suspicion, that there is a reason for it to be there at the moment that the flash paper is ignited. Routining is key to ANY effect, and can mean the difference between a so-so effect and a stunning effect.
I am curious how your coming along Joshua, as I love fire effects. I own a couple of Rick Haslett's flash shooters, (I believe that he is the creator of the Sharpie mentioned at the beginning of the thread) and use them in almost every show I perform. His stuff is top-notch, and well worth checking out. |

1. I use the sharpie as a wand in some cases.
2. the sharpie will still write and the routines I do that involved paper. the paper is written on with the sharpie. now what is so illogical about that. |

On the concern about melting Think of it this way. Why Use a "sharpie" why not a regular pen with a metal jacket? Just a thought for an option.

Good point Michael. but sharpies are what I normally use so I'm hoping to keep with that. I think it will be fine as long has I don;t keep it on long and I shouldn;t need to

If you use a metal pen, be sure your circuit is insulated, or the unit may short out. In fact, with careful planning, the metal jacket could become part of the circuit.

Built working test model not in a sharpie but afixed to a stick. seems I need a bit of flash cotton jammed into the plug. when I did this it works very well, the heat alone from the plug just puts a hole in the paper

Congratulations,
Nice to hear that flash cotton works to get it started. I had a similar problem trying to use a wire for ignition. -Craig
