David Devant came up with the basic concept in the late 1800's according to Peter Warlock. Frank Ducrot invented the commercial pocket silk version sold in magic shops c.1900. Because it was one of the first tricks he invented in the new century, he named it the 20th Century Silk Trick. 20th Century Bra- Howard Brooks, c.1930... just in case that was your next question.
