If money was no object, and neither space restrictions, what would be your ideal illusion show closer?

Hmm, this is a toughy...I'd probably do something along the lines of vanishing and reappearing in the audience.

A double exchange always makes for a good closer. It has that surprise factor.

I agree with the double exchange, only it would be with an unsuspecting member of the audience, in his seat.

Levitating the entire audience from their seats in order to get a standing/floating ovation.

Some think Houdini used trap doors in his act, but he was just going through a stage.

Historically, many illusionists here have chosen an impossibly large item, such as a helicopter or jet airplane that gives the appearance of filling the stage as a closing piece. Chris |

It would start small. As the music begins, an origami butterfly or bird is made and it starts to flutter its wings slowly. It then gently flies from the magi's hand, flying all over the stage. More and more origami animals are made which animate themselves around the stage. The stage becomes quite crowded, and the magi leaves the stage walking into the audience. He stops after several paces and turns around to look at the cornucopia of paper animals flying, walking, and moving in time to the music. Smiling, the magi raises his hands and with two very quick claps, all of the paper animals vanish in flashes of fire. YEESH! Can you imagine the set up?!

My advice is this: Don't close with an illusion.
Try something like this instead... Next to the last segment: Flashy Exchange With A Supermodel/Big Escape From A Live Volcano/Vanishing Airplane Full Of Elephants/Levitating Around Mars And Back/etc. Take your pick. Last segment: Small piece of hand/parlor magic that can be seen from the back of the house and emphasizes your personality. Go out on YOU. |

If you have ever seen Shawn Farquhar's "Shape of My Heart" routine, it is a practical, emotional closing effect. It puts emphasis on himself as a skilled sleight of hand artist. At the same time, it has an emotional touch.
Here is the link to his website, where you can see it being performed: http://www.shawnfarquhar.com/media.html And here it is listed on YouTube if you prefer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkYNAwdFH9M

Shape of My Heart...
Russ Stevens, from the UK, has been doing this for years. Sits on a stool doing card manips to produce the cards to the lyrics of the Sting song since at least 1993, when the song was released that year. He was performing this back then in the Mystique show at the Horseshoe in Blackpool, and also has this being shown on TV over the years, numerous times, before moving into a card sword routine. Re: Show Closer. I believe something that connects you to the audience can be stronger than some mega illusion to finish on, especially if you are a strong patter magician. I am not saying copy this, but remember the great impact Lance Burton had when he performed a straight jacket escape while hanging over and talking to the audience....something along those lines, where you are connecting with them and a miracle happens along the way...just you on stage, front cloth...great lighting...then at the end, curtain up to reveal the whole cast....take your bows.

That's right, Mark.
Russ Stevens has been doing that for years!!!!! How can you rip someone off like that? Oh, well. Russ has been ripped off with that idea many, many times. It's a shame. |

I loved Shawn's routine. I saw it at the last FISM. It's interesting to know that Russ performed something similar back in 1993.

Hello everyone,
It's been brought to my attention that the presentational idea for my card routine was being mentioned here on this thread. Mark Parker is correct in saying that I've been doing this since 1993. To be honest, I was getting tired of hearing from other magicians that I was ripping someone else's idea off. I know that Shawn Farquhar was under the impression that I had lifted his idea as he mentioned this to a friend at FFFF's a few years back. Having seen Shaun's version, I see that his routine is completely different (I'm back-palming, and he is doing an Ambitious Card sequence). But still, the presentational idea is the same. People have also mentioned that Cyril had performed my routine at FISM, the time before last I believe in the competition. I contacted Cyril by email, but received no reply. I finally decided to post my first ever public performance of my routine, on a BBCTV show in 1993, complete with date to let people know that I hadn't copied anyone else, which to me is the ultimate insult. You can see my routine at: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=rsvpmagic It's listed as original card routine. Best, Russ |

Yes, Russ, if you remember, I was there with you that day of the filming up in Blackpool...wow, that's 14 years ago!! The guy who introduced you Ross King had recently interviewed David Copperfield, if my memory serves me correctly.

Hi Folks,
I take offence to BP's statement "How can you rip someone off like that? Oh, well. Russ has been ripped off with that idea many, many times. It's a shame." It is statements like this that make the Café a sometimes less than desirable place to visit. I want to make it clear I have never ripped anyone off. I created the routine around the same time, although apparently after Russ Stevens. I created a routine that is similar only in the use of the music. Even Russ Stevens writes in a post above that "his routine is completely different (I'm back-palming, and he is doing an Ambitious Card sequence)". Russ and I have spoken via email, and I thought we had agreed we both created our own version of the effect independently. I will agree there are plenty of others who have since taken the routine without permission. Several can be seen on YouTube, and others, like Cyril's, has been seen in competition in Germany at Magic Hands and at FISM in Holland. I know of several magicians using similar routines to mine on cruise ships who had seen me first and still chose to present similar routines. It is a shame when one gets ripped off, as I have experienced countless times. It is just as bad when I have spent my life creating, performing, and sharing magic, and can be so easily attacked by someone like BP on the Café. Sincerely, Shawn Farquhar |
