I'm not sure you can get much better than the Paul Osbourne books. To me, he has the best.

Without any doubt the best book to start with....
The Seven Basic Secrets of Illusion Design by Eric Van Duzer I have all those books of Osborne and Steinmeiyer and many many more, but this book is the best when you don't know much about illusions. I gives you the basics of the illusion, the necessary measurements etc. It does not have big detailed plans in it but when you want to build something like a subtrunk it will have enough info for most people to be able to build one... If you are looking for up-to-date innovative illusions: Mark Parker's 4E Illusion Design, J.C.Sum's Illusionary Departures & Equilateral and Rand Woodbury's IllusionWorks series/ Diversions are great modern illusion books with lots of solid concepts and workable designs.

Hiding the Elephant by JS is my favorite. It combines history, concepts and even some psychological stuff.

Of course "Advanced Illusion Projects" by Tim Clothier, "Hiding the Elephant", "Art & Artifice", or "Device and Illusion", by Jim Stienmeyer.

Mark Parker Book.
Its a shame more illusionists don't take Marks illusions from the page to stage. But Mist/Sean Alexander built one, Russ Steven also. The Twins are always working with Mark Parker. Think he might have book 2 soon !!!!!!!! |

Haunted Illusions, by Osborne. It is a great collection of halloween-themed illusion that he has designed over the years. It is also a great reference if you are involved in large halloween events (as I have been for many years)

I toss my vote in for The Seven Basic Secrets of Illusion Design by Eric Van Duzer as well. Read it, loved it. A lot of awesome information on the psychology and history of illusion design! Bravo!

By far for me the best book (one of the best??) in my library is the Alan Wakeling Book (unfortunately now out in soft cover). For the thought, the designs, and the inspiration to create and work with quality props it can't be beat. Most of the major illusions described which have photos, were produced by John Gaughan, and they are amazing.
So, here is my follow-up question................ What would you pay for a book by Johnny Gaughan based on the c--p out there??? How about an illusion series by Jim Steinmeyer??? One illusion per book, full details and plans, with the quality level of the Fechner book. Should we start the bidding at $500.00 each book? A thousand??? What an addition to magic literature, and an illusion library this would be!!! Blair Marshall "ShaZzzam!"

Blair,
Love the idea for Jim to put out more books on individual illusions. I have the Modern Art and Other Mysteries, and love it. If only there were more... I have just managed to get my hands on a set of Rand Woodbury's Illusionworks books. They're taking pride of place on my desk at the moment. Some great ideas in there, and much better than the DVDs!
