Plain and simple,
http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/blogs/marquee/ Knowing that this is just a mass media/market event with no aesthetic values whatsoever... what does this imply for our craft. And what are you going to do about it?

There will be many that mess up things in anny field weather its magic ,new cars ,movies ,ECT,all we have to do is work around it ,guarding our secrets like fort Knox guards their gold!! I v seen the vicious cycle in inventors regarding their secrets.

Jonathan, the ethics of keeping secrets is no different than any other ethical question in our modern world, be it cloning or nuclear proliferation or global terrorism. We live in a world in which individuals have been given an enormous amount of power by various technologies. Scientists--somewhere in the world--will eventually pursue ALL that is technologically possible. Rogue states will develop WMD as they please. And terrorists will continue to make and use bombs for whatever purposes they see fit. So, individuals can use the web to reveal secrets (including how to make bombs) to a billion other people? They will do it if they can. We live in a time of something worse than moral and ethical relativism. It's not, "if it feels good, do it", but "if it is possible, someone will do it".
Again: what can be done, will be done. This is the Pandora's box of the modern world, and as technology grows, the things that can be done astonishes the mind! What shall I do about it? Continue to teach anyone who will listen, as Socrates did, that perhaps there is something more noble and rewarding for our souls than to do everything possible. Rather, we should do what is noble and good. But Jonathan: a few hundred people will read my last sentence and think me naive and crazy. This is our world. Jeff |

Animals are born and die by the tens of thousands every day.
Nations come and go often leaving little more than vague stories and a few ruins to mark their existance. But conjuring methods, refined by use and audience feedback, are more scarce than hens teeth and simply not replaceable. If some folks can't manage to keep their hands off a children's book... why let them near magic at all?

I repeat: we live in a world where the only restrictions are "legal"; and those restrictions only work when people get caught. But I accept your point that it is the magicians who are responsible for preserving "Magicdom". Other than blood oaths, Jonathan, what do you propose? Jeff |

Why are methods not replaceable again? Don't our methods evolve?
Why does every art except for ours seem to evolve?

The actual principles and nuances of human perception and how to efficiently exploit the gaps between what people accept they see and what is actually presented take a LONG time to find and exploit. It's not as if people who know about a gaff coin will be fooled just because the magician has a brand new and better made one. Once they know, they know. Kindly quit telling them.

Well I havn't told a soul myself.
But what can be done? We sell secrets to each other? What do you propose? An end to comercial magic as we know it? Won't that actually rerard the art itself? Don't we have to take the good with the bad? When we stop teaching each other we stop learning right? How do you propose the next generation learn? A secret handshake? Really isn't that a bit tough? We all want to close the doors now that we are in the room. I don't see it as possible. Exposure will happen because it will happen. It has happened for a long time. Look at how often the 3 card monte and shell game are exposed. Dosn't stop the suckers from running to get a bet down now does it?

Aren't suckers born every minute?
Sounds like an endless supply. The beans have been spilled on the How of a lot of magic. Those beans have been gathered up and sold. Magicians have bought those beans and grew their own, spilling plenty more along the way. Then, as soon as they cleared the ground, they were sold to other Magicians who spilled even more. There is no getting those beans back. The good thing is that knowing how to cook those beans to get a great flavor is not as common. Now the quest is for an audience with a discerning palate. |

As one can deduce for themselves, the first position argues that those who upload are heroes and doing our craft the greatest of favors for making the data available to all who seek it in the hopes that they will entertain and in so doing raise the general level of esteem for our craft.
As one can also deduce, the second position, the one about personal responsibility, argues that there should be far fewer folks in our craft as to manipulate the beliefs of others is about as invasive an act as one can perform. Folks are also welcome to waffle and bounce between the padded walls of hypocrisy, denial and sociopathic opportunism for as long as they wish. Activity without direction can be pleasant, and it is profitable to get others to bounce between those walls when one can charge money for the privilege. Cornered? Yes. Not boxed in or trapped or even caged. But at least we have found some of the walls that bound our world as it is. As always, our actions are our principles and beliefs realized. With good intent and best wishes, Jon

In any society where a person can't or won't accept the full consequences of their actions, there will always be those who think that actions like spoiling the endings of books and stealing intellectual property should be tolerated because it's "for the common betterment", etc. In their childish quest for so-called fame and glory, they regress further into their childhood, basing their actions on thier uncontrolled emotional needs of love, acceptance, and perhaps popularity (read: infamy).
What to do about it? Start at home. My 9 and 11 year old kids have values and principles and can keep a secret better than most of the adults I know. They're simply more mature.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Patrick if everyone started at home, problem solved. Very good point.
