David Hoy, when he was performing as Dr. Faust, used to start his show with a statement that went roughly, "My name is Dr. Faust. I am a fraud." That's about as strong a disclaimer as you can use. There was still a very high percentage of people in his audience who thought he could really read minds. There's a big difference between a percentage of the audience not believing, probably the majority, and the idea that a disclaimer will have no effect. The audience will believe what is demonstrated that fits within their existing belief framework, but that framework can be malleable. People are individuals. Of course people will believe something when they see it. They might have a predilection to believe something beforehand, but there is a difference between the ambiguity of not knowing and the solid belief of seeing. Of course people can change their beliefs in such circumstances. In other words, people have gone into a mentalism show not believing in psychic ability, and left believing in it. I have met such a person. I have also read testimony by such a person, and you can even find such testimony on the Internet if you search for it. The argument in your post that disclaimers don't work would be like a doctor ignoring all the patients with staph infections he cured with an antibiotic, saying, "Some of my patients had staph infections. I gave them an antibiotic, but they still died, so I'm never giving an antibiotic to anyone with a staph infection again because antibiotics don't work! (For the more literal-minded, I am not saying mentalism is like a staph infection - it's an analogy). Now, I'm not saying that any particular show needs a disclaimer, nor am I saying it need be explicit, nor during the show. But, I think some shows do need a disclaimer. I know from personal experience in my own performances that disclaimers can work even after the fact. I have been called psychic before, when I was naive enough to believe that nobody would think what I did was real. After performing, I was easily able to convince the person I wasn't, simply by gaining their trust by talking to them. I'm sure such people exist who would continue to believe no matter what, but the opposite kind of people also exist, those who actually will listen to what you say, and realize that you mean it.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Can't anyone here write anything without you "correcting" them to the smallest possible detail? You did that during my "experiment", you've done it before and you're doing it now. Just accept that you are way smarter than anyone here without having to constantly rub it in our faces. Maybe us "uninformed dummies" are happy in our ignorance and don't want to be corrected all the time. Let us play a little, please. Bill, that was an interesting read. Came across very fair. As far as disclaimers not working, they sort of don't if they are vague. Like if I say I don't read minds I read thoughts which means very little to an audience. Otherwise what you wrote makes sense, though I've never had someone watch me who didn't believe and started believing after they saw me perform. They have no clue how I did it, but they certainly don't start believing in supernatural powers if they didn't before. Maybe it's my presentation. I SHOULD be getting those reactions. Anabelle |

I'm feeling in a generous mood today - so I will share with you a particular powerful piece that I often use as a springboard for framing... DT3, this likely was an inspiration for the ID 10T codex - I myself came across this while doing some research on a mizzarist effect in the Library of Celeano... a nice Byakhee and I were trading some tales of High Adventure and lo and behold we tripped over Ambrose Bierce's remians and out rolled this scroll...

I'll apologize if YOU will, and stop retaliating against me for mistaking your experiment as a thinking error on your part rather than a transparent deception, which it was! |

It's very difficult to read voice tone and inflection on a message board like this one. The posts come across as linear, and the voice which ends up reading them is the one in our heads (our own). Our receptivity and state of mind puts it's own spin on other people's words quite often enough.
For instance an initial post posing a question to start a thread, is responded to in the very second post by someone saying..."That's a stupid question" ! Sometimes it appears that this forum heading here on the Café should read, "Blood for your thoughts". Bizarre as that may sound, the bizarre forum on the Café never spouts off with the apparent fury so frequently seen on this one. |

Who wants to claim the post that elicits this response?
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." Terry

As I constantly remind people who question me - magic IS magic... until you know the secret... then, it's just a trick.
Would you rather live in a world of magic or a world of tricks? |
