This advice has really helped me, kids show are actually quite hard, maybe not trick wise although there are some very skilled kids performers out there but perhaps the HARDEST thing of all is keeping the kids controlled and I thank everyone for such valid and helpful insights

I set where the front row will be. If the kids creep, I stop the show and I don't turn back around until they've moved back far enough. I work out of a tote, with props in compartments, so it's difficult to see anything. I also have the lid nearby so that I can close the tote. When I go to put away the board for the chair suspension, a bunch of things are on the tote, so it's a hassle for them to get a peek.

I end the show with a rabbit production; have the kids sit on the floor in a circle to pet them and then put up the same plain black photo background in front of my stage that I use to set up at the biginning for privacy.
This has worked perfectly, I get privacy when packing up and I have never had kids rush me, since they are all petting the rabbits under the supervision of a few of the parents that I have asked to watch to make sure the rabbits are not abused |

Stun, David? That's yer problem, you compromise and won't commit. Next thing you know, they'll be using wire hangers again...
Of course there's another good solution: http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/ass......pray.jpg

That magic roundabout tape with the Funken ring sounds like a really good combination to use. Dramatic too.

To prevent me from getting bum rushed at the end of the show, I use the birthday parent and goodie bags as a distraction. At close of the show, after giving the bday kid a gift, I mention that his/her parents arranged for all of them to get some really cool stuff too. I then pick up the goodie bags. I announce that here are goodie bags for all of them and I tell the parent to be standing behind the seated kids. I then hand the goodie bags to the parent for distribution. This takes the heat off of me for a moment and allows me to close up my prop case. Works like magic.

During the show I use a yoga mat on the floor in front of me. This is to provide padding for a rola-bola bit I do. It keeps the floor from getting scratched with the board and provides a nice surface. It also serves as a boundary. The kids just don't tend to creep past it. Also, when I bring a kid up we usually stand on the mat, so again it seems like an indication of being the 'stage area'. I was doing a street show with another performer one time, and I used the mat the usual way but during his set, the mat was used for the front row of kids to sit on. It workerd verey well like this also. Once the four or five kids are seated on the mat, they don't scoot forward and the other kids stay put behind it.
At the end of the show I just control it by immediately forming two balloon lines directly in front of me, one for boys, one for girls, in order from littlest kids to biggest kids. In this configuration they police themselves well, but if they do start digging in my trunk I can close it and just get the balloons from my pocket. If I get them into the balloon lines right away, I can then pop a loose prop into the trunk, etc., and they are in line for balloons. They don't want to lose their place, so they tend to stay put. |

I use an invisible fence for my dog, it works great. It might be an expensive upfront investment, all those collars, but it would solve the "dreaded creep"

Before my warm up, I use painters tape to form a line on the floor. We
Hen it is down,I will do a tight rope walk on the tape, falling off every once in a while for laughs. The kids get into it and follow suit. This reinforces the line, and they stay behind it. As for the end, I do snow storm, where I get all the kids to stand up and form a circle around the guest of honor. After the effect, I ask them if they can do me a favor, and bring the guest of honor back to the parents cheering, and to get a drink. I assign someone to count to 200, and then they can come back forming a train to receive a balloon animal, but they all have to be in the train. That usually works, and gives me enough time to put things away. |
